Think I just bought a box (Salvage Yard)

Walthers Cornerstone Series Washington Salvage Yard

well $30 they know what we like and I had to do it,

I knew it did not have the vehicles in the photo, but I recycle when the weather permits.

with scrap aluminum going from 20 cents to 90 cents a pound.

I think I may have had a few buildings that could have fit this profile

what next scrap wood for $10

here

Actually if I decide to buy that building I won’t use it as a scrap dealer…Maybe a processor of some type.

I sorta understand. Do you mean you bought an empty box, thinking you were getting the kit?

Funny you should post this now, I was just looking at this kit this morning and was thinking this will probley be the next one on my list. I won’t use for a salvage yard but more like an auto repair shop or something. From looking at the pic, it looks like it could easily be used for any number of things. Let me know when you get it, I would like to know more about it. Do you know what the foot print is? Mike

Main Building: 8-3/8 x 9-1/4 x 3-1/2" 21.2 x 23.4 x 8.8cm Scale: 8-5/8 x 1-7/8" 21.9 x 4.7cm

sorry trainManTy It just seems like a simple plastic box of a building

thanks BRAKIE

I guess I need to take more time to get a thought across

Budline, Im sorry, I was much harsher than I needed to be.

Sadly, much of our world is now just “boxes.” As such, it may not be interesting architecture, but Walthers has at least given us the model to start with in modelling “the real world.”

Like all kits, I would look on this one as the starting point for a scene. With paint, weathering and a few more details, it can take on a lot of different appearances. It could be a beverage distribution warehouse, or a scrap yard, or even a model railroad clubhouse, depending on how you finish the space around it and what signs you put out front.

NP it’s more my fault I get this from everyone

think its time to change this user name

but most others out here type way better than me and welcome to the fourm, you will find a wealth of info and most people are quick to jump in with some geat info

Mr B you are so right I see walthers catalog has a few kits very similar for under $20

but I got this on the way now and its off the to do list

That train holder for $10.00 is a bit steep Budliner…I see your point there…fifty cents at best [:D]

For $30.00, do they atleast include some chainlink fence to go around the “yard”?

I don’t think so

but its HO scale, $44.98, currently in stock at Walthers plus shipping

$5.95; orders up to $20
$7.25; orders from $20 - $70
10%; orders over $70
($13.00 max)

I do all my Walthers orders through my LHS. I get the sale price, and I don’t pay shipping. If there’s none closer to you that do that, it’s worth a trip out to Chelmsford - Maine Trains, www.mainetrains.com.

Sorry somewhat offtopic…
Mister Beasley, do you know if Gerry does custom painting? I am afraid to paint a GP40MC myself…
Back on Topic.
The Budd’s Trucking kit is also very rectangular box like besides the 2 doors facing the tracks…

It’s funny to see the price difference between these “boxes” when most of them cost about the same to produce. You can buy a DPM or Smalltown kit which literally are “boxes” that don’t come with any extra detail for $15 or you can buy something like Merchants Row III that consists of 160+ pieces for $20. Then there’s similar boxes in the $40+ range.[%-)]

While that is very true there is one draw back…The DPM buildings are dated unlike the Walthers buildings which is more “modern” in appearance. Also it would be hard to build a industrial area with DPM buildings and IMHO a modern boxcar doesn’t look “right” being unloaded at a small factory…I do like their city buildings especially for smaller cities.

How about Great West Models buildings, then ? Concrete reasonably modern looking “box” type low (one or two story) buildings, probably would look okay in an industrial park type of setting, costs around $18-$20 for the smaller kits.

E.g this one: http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/24-110

Anyone tried these GWM structures on their layout ? Are they any good ? Any special problems with them ?

Smile,
Stein

That Merchants Row III is a real building in Ohio that was built around 1910. That’s about the same era as the DPM’s. I know what you mean about the new cars off loading at old factories though. But I’m quite sure it still happens GODS layout![;)]

Rix also has quite a few of these spec building kits. All of them are quite modern and don’t have the Walther’s high price. And they are larger, to boot.

Had a quick look at walther’s web site - didn’t spot any obvious candidates from Rix.

Ah - went to http://www.rixproducts.com/ - they also own pikestuff and smalltown.

Yes, the Pikestuff lines seems to have quite a few modern looking light industry/warehouse type buildings.

Thanks for the tip!
