I just opened a bottle of WS latex for making my own molds. all the resources I’ve seen say that it is the consistancy of thick cream. Mine is more like Riccotta cheese. What can I use to thin it. If you’ve used it, it smells like ammomnia. Should I use ammonia? Water? Any other household substance? “Thank you” in advance for your reply.
You can put a small amount of latex in a paper cup and add a tiny bit of DISTILLED water to thin it to the consistency of whole milk. I use this as a first coat to pick up fine detail. But first wet the master pattern with distilled water. Don’t add soap because it will cause bubbles. You don’t need to thin the latex for the remaining coats, however sounds like your latex it’s drying out ( because air is getting to it) or is very old. Better use it up soon. After the third coat I use cheese cloth between coats to help build up the mold and add strength.
If the product is that thick or coagulated, there’s a good chance that it may have been frozen in a warehouse or shipping. Experiment with the thinning and see how well it cures if at all.
