Anybody else run into the following problem with the forum???
I have had two usernames because I had enrolled in the forum using two different web addresses. I was online as rtpoteet this A.M. and about 9:30 local I went off line to do some other things. Following the recommendation of my ISP (MSNTV) I cleared my cookies - I have done this many, many times before with no problems but such an action requires me to log in before rejoining the forum as a member - about 10:15 I attempted to rejoin the forum and couldn’t get logged back on; couldn’t do so with either of my usernames. It wasn’t until about a half-an-hour ago that I finally got back into the forum and then only after I had created a whole new user name. Back to post #1!!!
I had trouble trying to log in with one of these usernames when we came back on line on the 12th - it took me two and a half hours to do so - and, although, I was able to resurrect the old name I had to come up as virtually a new member of the forum and lost my posting count in the process. Tried to contact Bergie but he’s gone through the 11th; tried to go to customer service and got a response - I am sure it was prerecorded - that they will respond to my inquiry within two days. My attempts to get logged back on today kept telling me that I had ceased to exist and I was using a non-existent account even though it existed well enough for both bergie’s and customer service’s (prerecorded) responses.
Back on the twelfth I thought I was doing something stupid; after my experience of today I’m not so sure. Has this problem happened to anyone else???
Remember, you do NOT log in using your screen name. You log in using your e-mail address, complete with the @ sign and the name of the ISP you send otherwise perfectly good money to each month.
Anyone (and I’m not saying it’s you or anyone in particular, just anyone in general) who has fallen into this trap signify by saying “D’oh!”
#1 Don’t delete the cookie supplied by this site. It helps keep track of which messages you’ve read and so forth.
Everyone is so paranoid about cookies. I have NEVER had any spyware (check all the time), nor have I ever had a virus on any computer I’ve ever owned. I also clicked the box so the forums remember me for login. My favorite links me right to the top level of the forums, not the trains.com main page, and it works fine, I haven’t had to enter my password but once, the very first time I logged back in.
If I have any complaint about these new forums, it takes FOREVER once you click reply til you can actually type in the box, still downloading SOMETHING. And then at least half the time I get no cursor Firefox 1.5.0.5) unless I click somewhere within my text, then the cursor comes back and stays put til I finish typing.
I miss it too
Maybe its just us
We don’t like change
We don’t liek RR’s retiring our favor loco, we don’t like our favor railrroads being taken over, bought out, or merged
I guess some of Us (like me)
don’t like trains
the forums are a bit confusing while starting but i thin we will get used to it after time
If we never saw the old forums we would thinkk this was great
I will go A LONG WITH THAT! I run high level firewall settings. Have a fast cable and Window XP Pro made me feel like I had a little red dot on my forhead! Been reformatted 3 times, then I set the fire wall to stelth mode.
Was fine on the old site. This one, just a pain in the caboose! Have to refresh the page post icon 3 to 12 times before I can post.
Far as I can see another step backwards for MRR kind.

PS, if there where members at USA Rails I would have stayed there!
Randy, you are on a slow delivery for your internet, so viruses can’t get past your door. For those of us on broadband, some of them do slip through because the anti-virus software can’t detect them and stop them fast enough.
I have had two nasty viruses in the past four months, and had to do a system restore in order to rejoin the free world.
My problem with the new forum is that I can’t use the old forumula for downloading photos off of my Picture Trail account. Has anyone else run into this problem, and if so, how did you guys solve it? Frankly, it’s driving me NUTS!
You have to put the https…jpeg between [ img] and [/img ] (type them without the spaces). If I have more than one I copy the https’ to notepad and then copy them to the forum, individually, (PIA). If there’s a simpler way to do it, do tell!
I’m not having any trouble with the new forum at all. I run broadband at home, and I’ve got a fast connection at work. (Don’t tell the boss, please.) If anything, I’ve found that the forum responds much faster at work than the old one did. The old forum would sometimes take 10-15 seconds to load up a page, but now it’s much quicker.
I always entered my pictures manually with the img tags (from www.railimages.com) so I haven’t seen any difference there, either.
I use the free virus protection software from AVG at www.grisoft.com and I’ve found it works better than the name-brand stuff like Norton. It’s kept my home machine perfectly clean for a couple of years now, and even my daughter’s teenage games-and-messaging machine has been clean since I installed it (after I re-built the whole dang thing because it had been virused to death.)
Not true - it may be somewhat slow, but it IS an always-on connection and I actually have static IP addresses. And publicaly locatable by my domain name and WHOIS information. However - I do some simple common sense things that keep out the junk. For one, everythign is behind my router and I use network address translation. The only inbound traffic I allow is mail to my mail server. Second, I have Symantec antivirus on all my computers, and it’s always up to date. Third, I don’t even OPEN emails I don’t recognize the sender or domain it’s coming from.
I’ve seen plenty of attempts to do things to my network that are blocked at the firewall. Some that have even gotten past only to be thwarted by keeping my systems patched up to date - a good one was a couple of years ago when nearly every web site runnign IIS got killed - problem was, the patch from Microsoft that blocked that exploit was over 3 months old, no excuse to not have already instaled it. I had it installed already, and watched the entries build up I my IIS log as site after site tried to attack mine and failed.
And the amazing thing is it’s all Windows. 2000 on the servers, XP on my workstations.
Yes, use Photobucket. Under each picture you put in Photobucket, there are three options to linkt he image. One of them is the IMG tags used by this forum, you just click the button which does a copy, and come back here and paste - it puts int he img tags and the link for you.
Hate to say, but the img tag is one of the more common picture linking methods used by many different forum programs all over the place.
I’m with Randy. I’ve have a “light speed” always on account at home and I just keep my Windows and AVG anti-virus up-to-date. Oh, and I don’t surf at questionable websites (ie. porn, downloading sites, Kazaa and the like). HOW you use your computer determines about 98% of whether you’ll get a virus or not. If you are one of those porn surfers or downloaders, your chance of getting a virus or spyware are almost guaranteed.
And I’ve never had a problem with this site and my work computer is about as secure as they get. However, remember that this site is free and put on as a service to the MRR community and those that put it on have a right to make changes to it in order to improve their end of things (ie. making it easier to maintain and more secure from hackers). They had a reason for changing it and we just have to accept it. How many of you ten years ago would have even thought of doing something like this? Change is inevitable.
Its not us, theres too many computer savy people here b*tching about the faults that, its just a cheap system, the “Econo-forum” option… just my
…the proof being that I still have to type in the [censored] image bracket code ( the [ img] … [ /img] stuff) never once got any kind of reply as to what the deal was from Klambake. Anyone else notice that the landlords have been conspicuesly absent from any forum discussions about the shortcomings of the new forum?
