Hey Tim, the site really isn’t all that bad. I know that some folks are saying that it is too slow, but I have no problem with it. Maybe it’s time for a new computer? It wouldn’t hurt to perform regular maintenance on your hard drive either. When was the last time you did that?

Hi Todd. No your not meing a smart A!!. I’m running a 1.6 AMD with 512k of memory. I defrag once a week (Sun.A.M.) along with the usual other maintence goodies. I went from a dial-up to DSL about a year ago. When I go to other sites there’s no problema!! So I don’t think it’s my system. Regards Tim

Cable is megafast compared to DSL, you should look into it…

This seems to be an ongoing theme here. Hmm. Pay more to access this site or go to railfan.net and get faster response with better info and no extra out of pocket. Hmm, you decide. I have come to this site off & on for over 2 years using 5 different computers on 3 different systems and the results is the same. SSSSSLLLLLOOOOOWWWWW!! I had hopes that they would have addressed this by now, but hmm, I have decided.

I thought it was bum slow here too, in fact when the time warner guy finally “nailed me” with an introductory offer too good to pass up, this forum was one that came to mind, and I had to laugh, thinking “ohh great, I’ll have all the bandwidth in the world and will still watch trains mag “load” at 33.6K”…
Not so, however the loading times really snapped up when I bought into the fatter pipe on my end, maybe I’m hogging up your bandwith, without knowing it?? 
Seriously, local ISP’s, even DDL ISP’s play some strange games in apportioning the bandwidth they have to offer to their customer base, especially as their subscribed customer base gets healty size.
If you are at all familiar with the concept of CPU “timeslice” then you know full well what I’m getting at.
I don’t think it is Kalmbach’s fault in this instance, I really don’t.
Of course if the ed cares to divulge the hardware capacity at their end, it could clear this up once and for all, and my bet is they come out reasonably clean on this one.
Have you tried one of those “web tach” type utilities on your routing to Kalmbach’s servers? You might be very suppppprised to find where the bottleneck really is (fwiw)
Of course it is slow. To open up a little textfile you have to re-open the whole side with all it pictures and stuff. That’s the problem. Something for the webmaster to do.
Yes, The problem is in loading all the adds. Sites that don’t have the adds load fine. No, I’m not going to buy a “bigger pipe” so I can pay to have someones adds load faster. I’ll go some where else.

fwiw, I used to have EXACTLY the same philosophy, to the letter. In fact it’s a bit errie, almost like listening to myself in a delayed reaction chamber.
Then I got a fat pipe, and I know you will understand what I’m about to describe, but in using a friends computer the other day, who has a DSL connection,…I could barely stand it, it was so doggoned slow.
I know I sould like a blippity blip commercial for the cable company, but that’s not my intent…it just makes THAT much difference.
Here’s something that shouldn’t cost you a dime. Call your local cable company, and ask them if they have a “one month free trial, with no further obligation” promotion available for you to evaluate,…it’s how they got me, and I’ve since moved 2,600 miles, into an entirely new cable companies area. And, it was never a question in my mind, I called ahead and set up my new broadband account before ever moving.
“Cable” broadband has been $5.00/month cheaper than basic DSL in both locations come to think of it, you might stand to save some money AND enjoy a fatter pipe if you look into it.
