Mookie. Can you help me with something.
In Lincoln right at 1st street or A street. Or what ever Lincoln call it. Is where the BNSF splits to Omaha and Falls City. I see on Terra server that there is a creek just to the West. Is the Dike right next of the creek easy to get to? Can Railfans shoot Photo’s just on that Dike? Any thoughts?
Thanks,Allan.
Allan - it is Salt Creek and all trains using the east throat of the yard have to cross it. It is not a safe place to hang around. There is a bikepath that runs along the creek - and runs is the operative word. Daytimes are ok - but at night the street people live there and there has been, at least recently, a murder under one of the bridges.
Our spot is at 1st and J area. You can shoot lots of pictures there in relative safety. Start there and then expand to the bike path if you wish. Just don’t go off the path and don’t try to cross the 6 sets of tracks like some people do - with or without bikes.
If you want to come to Lincoln and need help finding a place to sit and take photos, e-mail me.
Another good spot for stills is at the 17th street entrance to the state fair grounds. They wait there a lot (especially weekends) to start coming into the yards. But lots of construction there - city boondoggle - and you can get lost.
Darn! I just hate Road construction. I just heard that the Stupid BNSF has got rid of the Auto van Trains and the Z-Trains too. What the Hell is BNSF thinking. Now it’s just to get more boring just looking at Coal Trains all the time. And not only that:The Manifests too.
Stupid BNSF! Sounds like another UP. Allan.
Good morning Allen & Mookie. We sometime stop at McDonalds on Cornhusker by the Goodyear plant. Some shade by the tracks, east bound full, westbound emptys,Also some locals in and out of Havelock. My other spot is by the woodworking cabinet shop at the 2nd st ? garde crossing at the east end of the yards.
Dave - the woodworking shop is the parking lot we use! I will look for you if you put a sign in your window. [:D]
We were there at 6 am Sun morning - like sitting on the patio! Had breakfast from Mickey D’s - it was quiet, cool in the shade and lots of action. (yes, even with trains only a few feet away, it is still relatively quiet!
