This layout needs?

Howdy from the grestest state of [:-^] Texas, i decided on my layout design–12 feet long and about 5 feet wide. Can ya’ll ell what building and such I could put out there? The layout era would be 40’s to 60’s timeline. Thanks, Stephen[8D]

Razorclaw,
It all depends on the geographical area and is it urban, rural, or industrial?

I would recommend putting a ‘knothole’ along one long side - a notch big enough to get yourself into. This will allow you to reach more of the layout’s center in case of trouble; it also allows you to place the other long side against the wall, perhaps to be hidden by some scenery and used as layover / storage trackage.

If you like to watch shorter trains on curves, you could put two such ‘knotholes’ in and make the table a Z shape.

i suggest you just look around and see what catches your eye. What part of texas are you in? i might be able to direct you to a good hobby shop.

Model some Oklahoma buildings, you know, a few houses and a cafe. Throw in a grain elevator and an OU water tower and you’ll be done[:D]. Do what Joe said, just drop in to your LHS and look around, you’ll find something pretty for your layout.

We’re still on top,
Greg

i Would think that one would find atleast an ice house and iceing platform to service all the ice reefers moving into and across the state. Also being such a large state I would think that there would be smaller engine service sand coal {oil} and water spread out across the line.Jv models makes a really nice wood kit of ice house with platform and when kit bashed with either Walthers or Intermountain platform kits turns into a really nice destination for reefers just comming from the fields or in transit. Hope this gives you a couple of ideas.

thanks to ya’ll. the layout would be rural or small town format. And no OU water tower, knowing the okies,it would always be out of water :).

Also for locmotives, put some F9s, but ya talk to LHS people.

Are you planning a sizeable stock yard and or meat processing plant I would think that then as now that the amount of beef being shipped out of texas would give you a great deal of traffic on your layout.

Texas sounds like a STUCCO state.
Brick, cinderblock, and stucco go well
in that region. Make some hacienda
flats for residents and get some cattle,
cowboys, oil wells. AIR CONDITIONERS !!!
I came to Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma
once, and boy does it get HOT.

Unless you have REAL long arms, 5 ft. wide is too much. It’s ok if you can get to it from both sides and its not against a wall.

Are you wanting to model Texas? Any particular road? Do you mean what industries to have on the layout or just scenery structures?

Small town Texas Industries:
the ubiquitious freight station (for less-than-car-load processing)
oil transfer station / fuel company
oil refinery / natural gas processing plant
paint factory or other chemical manufacturing plant
COOP grain elevator (every small town from the Gulf to North Dakota has one)
farm Implement distributor
animal feed processing / distributor
seed & ranch supplies
stock loading pens (pigs, sheep, cattle, horses)
gravel pits/sand company
cement company or asphalt plant
cold storage
lumber yard
phosphate mine
salt mine
quarry
light manufacturing
small warehouses
