As I remember, there was an article about Thomas the tank engine in a magazinea few years ago - possible here in a german magazine posible in MR - I don´t know.
The trains were built in 1:32 scale, using Maerklin parts like frames
They need this gauge because of the faces with moveable eyes of the engine .
I’ll add that in later episodes they sometimes used larger scale models for close-ups and smaller (I guess OO scale) ones for long shots. Model Railroader had 2 articles on the subject, on February 1992 and on April 1993.
Now, the sets weren’t a single massive 1 gauge layout, but a group of dioramas. Wether they still exist or not, I have no idea. Perhaps you’d like to try asking the folks at Britt-Alcroft.
By the way, Thomas the Tank Engine is about 80% responsible for getting me into this hobby.
Thomas lives and works on the San Juan Southern RR.[:D]
they used gauge 1 models. gauge 1 models use large scale track, only they’re not as big so they don’t look like narrow gauge trains. they used this scale because it was big enough and so they looked like real trains running on the right width of track. they’re still around but mostly in the UK. It’s a very nice scale to model, but expensive.
here are some videos of some running:
