Thomas The Tank Engine

What type of locomotive was Thomas The Tank Engine? What type of locomotive is his enemy, Diesel 10? Did it have a turbocharger? Did those types of locomotives really exist in England,or did someone just make them up.

keep asking, keep learning

Ya know I watch Thomas the Tank Engine all the time. And I’ve never really asked that question before. To me Diesel 10 reminds me of an E-unit. lol.
Enlighten US people!

Terry,

Thomas the Tank Engine was based on a London Brighton and South Coast class E-2 0-6-0 tank locomotive. The only changes on “Thomas” were the small cab side window in front of the cab “cutaway” and the elimination of the “reverse curve” in the running plate at the rear end.

All the original locomotives in the Wilbert Awdry books were based on real prototypes. I can’t call “Diesel 10” to mind right now.

The diesel locomotive in the Thomas movie fitted with the “crane grab” did not exist in that form, but the locomotive part was a British Rail class 42 “Warship Class”, a diesel hydraulic locomotive with two German 1100 HP diesel engines and two transmissions. some units had Maybach engines and Mekhydro transmissions and others had MAN engines and Voith transmissions. The Maybach- Mekhydro equipment was the same as in the Baldwin “Train X” locomotives mentioned in other threads, but two sets against one in the Baldwin. The British locomotives didn’t have the equipment carried on the power truck, either!

For Thoms the Tank Engine appearances in the US see the Strasburg RR site. They refitted a Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal 0-6-0 to make a very convincing Thomas under live steam. However, he’s trucked to all the appearances away from Strasburg so don’t bother looking for him on the high iron.

I did a speech on “My love of Trains” in a class that I took a year ago and I used Thomas the Tank Engine as my last Power Point Slide. People asked me if I was a big kid that loved Trains and I told them YES! They thought the presentation was neat.

Thomas made a visit to the Austin & Northwestern this weekend. This particular version is non-powered but fitted with a proper british whistle and a smoke generator. They ran 20 minute trips using Austin & Northwestern’s six passenger cars. An Austin Arean Terminal Railroad diesel provided power.

The Austin Convention Center as a track in the street between the convention center and the Hilton Hotel in the next block. Thus each of these trips required about 2 blocks of street running before entering the A&NW right of way. Since the street is also being used for construction staging for a new convention center parking garage, the interplay between the Thomas trains and the 18 wheelers made for some interesting logistics.
