Those beautifu NW5s

For my new layout i want to have an HO model of an NW5 and was thinking about starting with a couple athearn SW-7 shells and a GP9/7/20/18 chassis. Any Suggestions?

Do as much research on the net as possible, pulling up as many pictures as possible, then start hacking bits of body shell apart and have lots of fun. If you haven’t done much of this sort of thing before you might want to try on something you can afford to waste (ahem, get wrong a couple of times!!)

Posting a few pics up will really help us all too.

Man, if you wanted to see a picture of a NW5 go to the Northshore Scenic Railroads website. They own a real Great Northern NW5. Runs bueatifully and sounds great.
Check it out and get your pictures there.

I too, have an interest in building an NW5…actually because of the GN 192 at the Lake Superior Railroad Museum ( www.lsrm.org ) which runs the North Shore Scenic Railroad in Duluth. I bought a Railmodel Journal magazine, July 2003 vintage just because there is an article in it about kit bashing an NW5 using Athearn body shells. Pretty good article, too. I wish I could lay my hands on the magazine to give you some specifics, but you can look it up in the ‘Index of Magazines’ (link at the top of the page) and typing in the keyword NW5. The magazine has a website and you can order back issues from them.

Old thread, but I am curious about how you would go about this.
