i always tell my parents, this is not just a hobby, look at all the things im learning!
That’s why some people don’t like clubs.
Why kid? The ACE3000 that is in one of the old MR’s (early 80s) I’ve got laying around is still a valid concept. I think the design was basically a 4-4-4-4 or 6-4-4-6…
Yep all youse guys is right…we are also well rounded and well versed people that can all get along because of a little train. Too bad All of the nasties in the world couldnt get together and build a model rr and just have fun and accept everyone at every level that each of us are at.
I agree with all those thoughts on who we are as model railroaders.
Plus, since I’ve taken on those model railroader tasks, I’ve gotten a lot better at “tinkering and fixing” other things. For instance, I completely rewired a dining room chandelier without any fuss. Also, I find myself fixing things around the house that in the past I would have tossed out and replaced. I guess our model railroading skills teach us to be more thoughtful and courageous in other areas too.

And to top it off, I still like to go down stairs and play with my trains.
Yea! And we could go back to manual brakemen running down the tops of trains as a form of population control.[;)]
I have thought about this topic a lot in the past. I think all the different skills involved is what keeps me interested in the hobby. If you don’t feel like doing balast one day, there’s always something else to be done.I don’t consider myself an artistic type, but I sure can make a layout look pretty dang good!
