A numberof Swiss railway lines use electric locomotives that pull pwer from overhead caentary but use a cog drive system with the cneter “third” rail being the cog drive line.

I remember seeing the “third rail” on the line shown in the Clint Eastwood flick Eiger Sanction.

No, it wasn’t a rack. It was a perfectly normal stock rail, screwed to the center of the ties exactly like the rails on either side, at the end of a terminal track.

Dual gauge line?

I doubt it. A centered rail implies a gauge of about 685 millimeters.
