In my possession I have a Burned up CMI Hogger 101 power pack.
Through my own stupidity I managed to burn the base unit up. However the throttle is still Good.
I am wondering, if I can determin which pair of wires are the input and which pair are the out put (Or does anyone know) can I wire this throttle up to the “fixed DC” terminals on a MRC power pack and still be able to employ this throttle I have it figured out how I woulld make such a connection. I just need to know If I wire it up Will it work.
MRC Power packs come with three sets of terminals. One labeled “Variable DC” for conventional track power. “Fixed DC” and “Acceccories”
MRC used to sell a walk around throttle that was wired to the Fixed DC terminals on one of their power packs. So I am wondering if I wire my CMI thtottle up the same way, Will it work?
Well, James, I don’t have any experience with this particular unit. However, the way they usually work is that some circuitry in the hand-held throttle unit controls some other circuitry in the base unit.
In other words, smaller amounts of control voltage, and not the track voltage itself, is what travels from the base to the throttle, and then back to the base. Years ago, I built the TFAS II and that was the way it worked.
Again, the CMI unit may be different. But if it isn’t, and you hook it up as you propose, you may fry the throttle as well.
My suggestion would be to open the base unit and assess the damage. If there is an electronics repair shop nearby they may be able repair it, or at least offer advice.
But hooking the throttle to the MRC power pack would be my very last resort, since that could burn up the throttle itself.
