Does anyone have ho scale trains they are going to throw away?
C’mon,C’mon, A model Railroader throw ANYTHING away, what planet are you from?? the concept is to collect so much stuff you can’t use in 15 lifetimes, anyway, all us old geezers are always on the mooch trying to pry stuff from these guys, Good Luck. And by the way----- All us old guys don’t "throw stuff away’’ it’s called recycling, there’s always a spot on the layout for something.

I was going to thrown away 31 old body shells that were for projects that ain’t never goin’ to happen anymore. BUT I found a guy who’d pay me a buck each plus shipping. Happy him (neat new toys). Happy me ($). Happy wife ( ).

First rule my LHS owner told me is “don’t thow away anything” and he was right!
NO throwing it away. If I never meet my wife, Mother in law was near throwing away the train set that late father in law has, I never got to meet him. Told mother I will take it all out now I have it all at my place and I have my father’s train set too some parts are damaged am going to put them on shelf and retire them.
Seeing that you a bit younger than many of us on the forum, I will give you some advice. Ask the question you really intended to ask, it is better to be direct than beating around the bush.
As others have posted, nothing gets thrown away. It gets modified, kitbashed, used as parts, becomes trade bait or given to someone who can use it.

It’s true that nothing ever gets thrown away. A great example, I have some LEDs that I accidentally ordered the wrong color. I will keep them for some future project.
As far as trade bait or things to simply give away, I do have some that I would be glad to get off my hands.

Does anybody have a Brass Y6B they wanna toss out? And maybe 40 or 50 Brass H21 or H21A Hopper Cars? And if you have loads for that hoppers, that’d be good too. And maybe some track-- no Brass please-- Micro Engineering Code 70 preferred!! Come to think of it, I could use a Brass N5C Cabin Car too…
You know, if anybody has any of this stuff they’re gonna just toss out or something, I wouldn’t mind taking it off your hands and saving you the trouble.

Yep, that’s me. I still have everything I have bought since 1971 when I got into the hobby. Also have the kids’ trains. In fact I still have brass flex track on fiber ties that I salvaged from my first layout.
Sometimes I think this hobby is really the Art of Packratting. [(-D]

Hello If a model railroader throws something away you don’t want it. There will be nothing left that is usable. We take all parts off that come off. We cut the parts off that don’t come off. We make it in to something else. We pack whats left away just in case we need it. But we never throw anything away. What are you looking for? Have nice day Frank
I may have some odds and ends coming up in the near future, especially enough Kadees and Kadee compatable couplers to outfit a bunch of cars.
Send me a PM with an idea of what you’re looking for, and maybe I can help out a bit, especially for someone just starting out in the hobby.
I found ebay to be a perfect “trash can” for all the stuff I can’t use anymore. I came to the realization recently that I have way to much stuff so I am selling off some of the old plastic that doesn’t fit into my scheme, kits that I will never build, and damaged rolling stock that I don’t feel like fixing. In the past week I have made close to $300 and I still have alot of stuff to sell. Another few hundred and I will be able to buy that brass SF mikado the next time one shows up for bid. [:)] Like they guys have already said, nothing really gets thrown out.
The only thing I ever throw away are those hideous plastic horn hook couplers and old, plastic wheel sets with oversized flanges and warped axles.
A modeler never throws things away. I’m not going to poke at you or joke around with you but give you some sound advice. I was your age once and I too wanted as many model cars as I could get my hands on. (I wasn’t into model trains as of yet but really loved building model cars at the time.) I didn’t have any money except for the $2.00 a week my dad gave me for doing chores around the house so this is what I did. I went out and found people that needed my services. I would mow grass, clean out garages, wash cars, and what ever it took to get a cash flow going.
Once I had enough money to get a new model car , I’d then go out and buy it at the local TG&Y or Gibson’s Dept. store. (Now i’m giving away my age) Anyway, I suggest you do the same thing and when you get enough money saved up, talk your folks into taking you to a train show in or near your home town. You can pick up some decent used rolling stock and locomotives for $2.00 - $20.00.
You have your whole life ahead of you and if you study hard and work hard, one day you’re gonna have a train layout of your wildest dreams. It takes time for things to happen but as young as you are you have plenty of time to get your own train stuff without asking other people for theirs…chuck

He’s contacted me via a PM and I have some Kadee couplers and some sectional track that I’m not using that I can send off to him. Even costing me postage, it will do more in his hands than it is (or will) sitting in a box in my basement, or in a landfill.
If my getting rid of unused and unwanted MRR items from my basement/collection that may help get someone else moving ahead in the hobby means I’m not a modeler, or a model railroader, than good for me. The more posts I read, the more I’m beginning to think I’m better off without that label.
