On my way home from a recent trip to Toronto I was able to stop at a Hobby Shop, where I found and eventually purchased their # 8134, which is a box of 130 pcs. Window and Door Assortment. Essentially this is a sample kit of various building parts, but mostly doors and windows. Inside, the box was a Grandt Comparison Chart. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but now it’s got me curious. Is there a difference between the two products? I would appreciate your comments on Tichy products whether they be good, bad or indifferent. As always, thanks to all your replies.
I’ve been happy with the Tichy stuff I’ve purchased, but it’s a small sample. I’ve got some doors and windows, and some fire escapes. All of these are plastic castings, and they have small, thin parts. Every one of the castings I’ve bought has been absolutely perfect and required no trimming of flash or other excess plastic.
Is there any comparison to the Grandt products? Is one better over the other?
When I purchased these I was hoping that there would be enough of one style to do the add-on office to my factory, but unfortunately no. I will have to order additional windows. Any experience with ordering from them direct? Or, would you recomment ordering them through my LHS?
I used their #8134, 130 piece window and door assortment in HO scale, for several scratch-built buildings and was satisfied with their quality. Their castings are cleaner than some other brands and I never had any problems with breakage.
Their doors and windows are not the same size as any other brand that I was using, however, so if you’re working with scale drawings that call for another brand to be used, you will have to modify your door and window openings.
In a couple of instances, there were not enough pieces of a particular type of window or door that I needed in the Tichy assortment, so I had to modify the buildings to fit what was available.
Tichy products have always been the rivit-counters standard and the kits they have produced have the highest quality and fidelity.
Some of their moulds (if not all) have been purchased by Intermountain and they have been releasing their Tichy line of products in plastic as opposed to the Tichy resin. The latest one is the outside-braced box car. An amazing model.
I do have the steam wrecking crane kit. I have been somewhat apprehensive in starting it, There was a thread recently about this kit. I will probably give it a go this fall. Thanks for the info.
I’ve built just about every car that was ever released from Gould, then Tichy. They have never been resin kits. They always have been styrene, and assembled easily with liquid plastic cement using a small brush. Resin kits require assembly with CA
You are correct sir…after I posted, I realized that they indeed were plastic kits. It has been a long time (about 15 years) since I attempted one of their kits.
Shilshole - Thanks for the info. I was thinking maybe I should add some additional items to make it worth my while. But on the other hand I only need the windows and I can’t imagine that wil be a huge bill and I do like to give my LHS as much business as I can … so … we shall see.
David B - Thanks for the advise. Several people have told me that. And since I am a rather novice at this sort of thing I will indeed take my time and I am sure I will be asking for more advisce once I begin to assemble it. For now I will be content with finishing my woodworking factory / complex.
