I tried a similar product and found it was difficult to do a good job around the tie plates.

I’ve used the Floquil ones and found them to work quite nicely. It’s not a simple hold the tip on and run along the track and it’s painted, you do have to work them back and forth a little and run along the rail in both directions - that’s how you fill in around the tie plates, otherwise you have a shadow toone side of each one with unpainted rail showing.
I do a first coat in rust, making no effort to keep it off the tie plates. When that’s dry, I use the grimy black one for a second coat, and try to keep that on the web of the rail only, as much as possible.

I just got done using them on my layout. Pros: easy alternative to airbrushing. Good color. Can use at any point during construction. Cons: you have to go over the rails and plates multiple times to get good coverage. Especially when the pens nubs start to wear out, which they do fairly quickly. I’m pretty happy with the results - especially since my track was already complete and ballasted.

I’ve had good results with the Tidy Track Pens. As others have said, they require passes in both directions for good coverage. The tips have a “sweet spot” somewhere between brand new and totally frayed, when they really cover well.
I have tried these, painting with a brush(tedious),and the rail painter with the little foam wheel(waste of time). For me,the Tidy Tracks are the easily the best method of the three, but I sure wish I’d done this before I ballasted!
