I always thought the correct spacing between ties is 21 inches. The spacing between ties on the Walthers code 83 flex track is 24" , very close. The spacing between ties on the Walthers turnout is 12". On the prototype, are ties spaced closer on turnouts?
The spacing between ties on my Micro Engineering code 83 flex track is 13". The spacing between ties on my Micro Engineering code 83 turnout is 12".
Comments, please! I’m not sure which combo to use.
Sorry, but I mixed up tie gap and tie spacing. Prototype tie spacing is 21" and tie gap is 12". The numbers I included in the previous post for Walthers and Micro Engineering are for gap between ties, not tie spacing. The Walthers flex track gap is off by a factor of 2 to 1. The turnout spacing is correct.
Tie spacing depends on track usage. On sidings, for example, they are spaced further apart than on the mainline. The spacing through special trackwork like switch can vary depending on where there is room to drive spikes between the components. The railroad in question can also play a part.
