can anyone tell me who makes a nice little timber trestle,or any articles on wooden trestles? thanks for any replies
I’ve bought a few timber trestles on eBay from this guy and have been very satisfied with the quality and appearance…plus he’ll custom build stuff to your specs.
eBay: SCRATCHBUILT HO BLACK TRESTLE BRIDGE (item 330103153334 end time Mar-31-07 12:00:46 PDT)
Hi, If you’d like to try your hand at building one, I found this site quite informative, and used their diagram for the curved deck one that is currently on my layout.
I’ve had fun with scratch building trestles. This was my start building an American style layout.
You see my description at http://www.westportterminal.de/trestle.html

Unless it’s a matter of a shortage of time…Try your hand at building one.
This was my first attempt at a trestle. Just an idea of what I wanted, a single edge razor blade, stripwood and some glue.

Some links to good information is ready posted are above and will give some great information.

If time permits, give it a try. It’s very rewarding!
Kalmbach’s bridges and trestle books give you all you need. I built this one from scratch using thier ideas and plans. It took forever, but was not all that hard. If you have never built anything like this before, expect some frustration, but it can be done. Keep us posted as you progress for we are all learning this together.

Try Black Bear Construction Co. They sell trestle kits and have a LOT of information on prototype and model trestle construction. IMHO you’d be better off using their plans (free links to them on their website) or other plans that are frequently published in modeling magazines, buying the appropiate stripwood, NBWs, rail etc, and building your own as opposed to a kit. I’ve scratch built many trestles and it isn’t that difficult. You can also make your own jig out of styrene. For painting, I use an India ink and alcohol wash or leather dye and alcohol washes (or both for a nice weathered effect.
I see Black Bear is already mentioned. Try also Cristal River. They also have several types of timber bridges. Many LHS carry them.
I recommend styrene for building a trestle. You can find out all about it here in MR’s downloadable video PDF:
