Time spent on your hobby

Hi guys,

How many hours a week do you spend on model railroad activities:

  • running trains ?

  • building your layout/ working on your models ?

  • on the internet ?

Curious MD.

I run my trains while I work on my layout, so about 5-8 hours a week. I spend about 1 hour a day on the internet for train related activities.

Here is what I would like it to be: 8 hrs running trains, 8 hrs building trains, 8 hrs on internet, repeat. Unfortunately, my weekly schedule is more like 1-2 hrs running trains, 4-7 hrs building trains, and maybe 2-4 hrs on internet.

After the demands of the job, parenting, Cub Scouts, basic home maintenance, and personal needs (sleep, meals, hygiene), my usual response is, “I’m too tired to work on the layout, I’ll just putter on the internet for a while”.

I usually manage to eke out a couple of short sessions on weeknights, and probably 4-5 hours on the weekends, for a total of maybe 10 hours of either operating or modeling, as the mood takes me, and maybe 7 hrs (1 a day) on the Internet.

30 to 40 hours a week !

In the winter!

Retirement - It can’t get any better than this!

About 6-8 hours a day since I’m retired, between yard work and other things that may need done around the house it varies. besides it’s cooler in the basement in the summertime. This time of year I’m down there about 7 am til 4-5 pm most days. Jim from Brookfield Ohio.

Sadly, I spend more time on the internet than actually working on the layout. Part of that is the fact that I can spend down time at work on the computer. It’s also because I look for inspiration for every project I encounter. I spend more time reading old threads than participating in new ones to see how others have approached modeling issues. To answer the question, I spend maybe ten hours a week working on the layout. I probably spend twice that amount reading about them.

30-40 hours a week currently, it will fall off a bit once the weather gets better. However, it took me 45 years to get to this point. [:)]

I spend about 3 hours running trains, 20-25 hours building, and maybe 5-10 on the internet researching. Once the new layout is complete I expect building time to drop and operating time to rise.

Currently “running trains” mainly entails checking track and dropping cars to non-existent industries.

I’d say about 16 hours a week, including time at the club. This week will be more since we have open house on Saturday and Sunday.

For me it depends on the time of year. I’m usually running trains on Sundays for 2 to 4 hours, through the week I work on the layout for maybe 4 to 6 hours and I’m usually on the internet for around a hour a day after work. I do work on buildings while watching TV with my wife, I have a TV tray set up to do my modeling on. This is during the winter months. Spring, Summer and Fall I’m doing other stuff and my layout only gets worked on if its raining out on the weekends.
