With the never ending rise of gas prices it is time to cut back on other things such as the internet access. I know some are getting rich off gas prices but most of us are really paying for it. The internet is just one way of cutting back and yes there are many others with the exception of model railroading. I have been on this forum for many years, even though I have a new name and date for the new one and I have learned alot, sorry to have to go.
That’s too bad. Hate to see you go.[V]

Godspeed and come back as soon as you can manage it!
Check into your public library. Mine has Internet access and terminals for general use. Some provide wireless for those with laptops. Our library even has a subscription to Model Railroader.
Also, there are dial-up ISP’s a lot cheaper than AOL, so you might want to look into one of these providers to maintain some Internet capability at home.
I concur, with MisterBeasley… Lots of libraries have free access, as well as university, tech schools, etc. Best of luck to you m8.
Brian
Sorry to see you go, If your wife likes to go shopping alot for clothes, tell her to stop, that might save you a couple thousand…
Always sorry to loose any forum members reguardless of the reason, but am a bit surprised at this one. Relatively (to the average wage) speaking, gasoline is still cheaper than it was in 1980 (Source Standard & Poor’s and Bureau of Labor Statistics). I think artificially low fuel prices for so many years suckered many people into purchasing a “more power” rather than fuel efficient vechicle. I had a 1994 Buick that got 36 mpg., now one is lucky (reguardless of the pathetic GM ads) to find one that can get at least 25 mpg. And the internet is way cheaper than it used to be (even though I can’t find any solid numbers). I’ve got a 6Mbs DSL now for less than half of what I was paying for 28.8Kbs dial up ten years ago. As Mr Beasley says, our library has free internet access. Perhaps you could check in that way from time to time.
I hope the increasing price of Model Railroad RTR equipment rather than the “good-old” kits, didn’t play a part in your leaving us.
So it might cost an extra 10 bucks a week to fill up the car, big deal. Most of my hobbies require the use of gasoline but you don’t hear me crying about the price of gas. Its funny, the price of beer goes up and people don’t complain, cigarettes go up and people still buy them. People buy a can of Coke or Pepsi out of a machine for a dollar when you can buy a case of 24 for 7. I think if people can’t absorb a little gas price increase then they are living way beyond their means to start with and they should really think about cutting back on hobbies first.
Either that, or they might be willing to switch to a more fuel-efficient car, or, if they can’t afford that, drive a little less…stay home and work on the railroad instead of taking a trip to the mall!
I’m sorry to see you go. Stay in touch if you can and we’ll keep a candle in the window for you. Take care now.[:(]
See you when you get back.
We keep one car in town filling once a month, and the other car is severly restricted to what gas it uses every week. In spite of these draconian restricitons I (Fixed income) maintain my home. Paying off debt is the way we chose to manage our responsibilites and we are almost done with the bills except for utilities and consumables.
At this time we dont care what the pump says as long there is gas availible to both cars for the needed trips. The biggest change is in my part time work. I dont go burn 11 dollars gas to make 20 dollars gross on a half day. I wait until there is a definate minium gross of 40 dollars to make a profit for the workday.
Kinds of reminds me of trucking where you would compare the freight offer against what it will cost to get the truck to the load and deliver it.
Now, I witness alot of people who have not changed or slowed down on our roads at all. They get the gas and go regardless of what it costs. Wages in our state will go up Oct. 1st which will probably restrict hours worked or total number of jobs availible by employers who are maxed out on thier payrolls.
I have a feeling that 2007 is going to be a very bad year economically. Everything I see I saw back in the Carter Administration just before the big 80’s recession.
I’ll stop here because I dont know when to be quiet today.
Have a GREAT day.

Its not called crying its called reality, it is not just gas that goes up. Do you have a house and how do you heat it or ernergize it they are all going up due to the rising cost of oil. Groceries are going up along with everything. When it comes time to cut back this is the way I see fit. It cost more than 10 bucks extra a week if you dont live near work or if work consists of travelling.
I previously had dial-up Internet service for about $15 per month, however it was too slow to be of any value. My wife and I both have cell phones with free long distance and don’t use our land line phone. Sprint requires me to purchase local phone service from them to get the DSL service. If it wasn’t for the DSL I would not have land line phone service to the house. I live in rural Kansas and do not have access to wireless internet or cable internet service. We too have to make choices and chose to give up TV service for the DSL as we both like to “surf the net”.
My 2 cents for what it is worth. JIM
D&HRR,
O.K, but don’t sign off or cancel your membership. Keep your forum name and whenever you visit a friend or relative with internet access, ask them to let your “check in” here. As mentioned you can also go to you local library.
Back in 2004 I was without the internet for over a month. Yet, I dropped by my library one to two times a week and stayed active. Whenever I visited my sister and her family I was always welcome to use her computer as well. My wife’s cousin, a modele railroader, also had internet acesss. Same situation.
There’s always a way!
So stay onboard, Amigo.[:D][;)]

Hey Net-zero is 9.99 a month, I have no problem with dialup for ebay and forums, go to a buddys with dsl for gaiming though.
We all have to save money where we can, I just switched from high speed cable access for $39.-/month to DSL ($17.-/month) through our new phone company (that switch also saved us another 30 bucks a month). The way I use email to keep in touch with people, I could easily spend 20-30 bucks a month using snail mail, so dropping my internet would not be very realistic way to save money.
I think if people can’t absorb a little gas price increase then they are living way beyond their means to start with and they should really think about cutting back on hobbies first.
he is , he’s cutting back on his internet hobby
sorry to hear things are that tight for you , take the advice above and check out your local library for free internet access , hopefully we’ll see you around !
Yes I have a house and I heat it with natural gas. I drive 112 kilometers a day going back and forth to work. I drive either my S-10 or my wifes Alero to work while my wife drives my GMC Extended Cab Z-71 4X4 pickup about 8 kilometers back and forth to work. The Trans Am is a toy and only gets driven to car shows or the odd Saturday the wife and I will go for a drive. Same goes for my ATV’s and the boat, they are toys so if you want to play then you have to pay. Dude, everything is going up in price and everything will continue to. All I’m saying is if putting an extra 10 bucks a week in the gas tank is killing you then you either need to get another job or start cutting back on your entertainment expenses at least until you get some cash in the bank. Personally I get a little fed up with people crying about the price of gas all the time. We in North America have some of the cheapest gas in the world and we drive probably the biggest vehicles made. If people don’t like it then they should go buy a tiny little gas miser and quit crying. I feel safe in my Alero and my trucks, especially the 4x4. I’ve riden in a Kia Rio, a Pontiac Wave and a Honda Civic and didn’t like the feeling of being so tiny on the highway. I’ll pay the extra to drive what I drive and I won’t cry about it.
Maybe it’s just me, but if I ever quit the hobby or drop the net service, you’d be the last to know. The guys got to do what he feels is right for his situation, posting it just brings up both sympathy and more. Some times it’s better to let sleeping dogs lie…Mike
