Time to view and vote in our biweekly photo contest, Trackside with Trains.com

Volume 138 of Trackside with Trains.com — our biweekly photo contest — is now live. Four photographers submitted images for this round’s theme: “Glint.”

View the selection and vote for your favorite. Then come back to talk about the images.

For me it was a toss up between Erik and Alex but the glint off the windshield of the locomotive of the coal train was like that of the glint of a diamond…so, diamond glint, black diamonds…yeah, ya get it!

Submissions from Andy & Alex seemed to have the most drama. I went with Andy’s. It’s probably the best photo of flat land running I’ve ever seen.

[tup] Erik’s photo of glint is a great story . With the full glare on the window the number board is on a different angle and is in full view.To me it is eye catching and does not detract from the rest of the story, it adds to it. Cannonball

I liked ERIK’s RECIPE ! [C=:-)]

P.S.[dinner] BERGIE;

HOPE THE JOB IS WORKING OUT FOR YOU! [:-^]

Look forward to having you hang out once in a while and make some comments[swg]. Anyhow, Some of us raise a verbal glass of slivovitz in your honor from time to time! [:-^]

Erik, I bought your sensible explanation, and the timing (being first to establish an operational definition) didn’t hurt, neither. [(-D]

Andy got my vote. That’s printable for the purpose of hanging on the wall. Nice!

Erik deserves the “unique interpretation award” for nicely shooting a form of glint that most railfans don’t think about (or often try to avoid). But I gotta give the straight-up thumbs up to Andy for his beautiful scene with great light, vertical S-curve, and water reflecting some of the sky’s color.

Erik gets the vote from this corner, too. Welcome back!

However, your prediction didn’t come true. I, too, was expecting to see glint off the rails. Wish you all could come around my “place” with a camera–recent weeks have been just right for some amazing rail glint!

Anyone get some good glint with anything besides the sun? I’m visualizing a full moon in a clear sky, a set of interlocking signals, and one or the other providing rail glint. Or maybe I need a headlight…

A postscript: Pat also chose Erik’s shot, and gave Alex’s a close runner-up.

FOUR FINE PHOTOS THIS WEEK! In fact, three golden ones and one “Real Glint” as I see them.

As much as I loved all the golden reflections, I thought Eriks windshield flash was the “one” !

All of the photos are beautiful. It is hard to say one is better than another. Ultimately, I selected Alex Mayes’ photo even though I am not a big passenger train fanatic. It is such a well framed, interesting shot.

I almost went for Alex’s shot, but pulled up Erik’s again and lo and behold: there’s a few rail glints there! So, I had to vote for it. Well framed shot as well.

Tough choices today, but I settled on Erik’s shot. It’s a different approach to glint.
Thanks men, keep 'em coming.
Fred

I got REAL picky about definition…and while I liked the shots with gleam…only Erik’s actually had a GLINT.

Erik’s photo is best by far. To me this is a true glint photo shot. The others are also good photos but to me a golden glow is not realy a glint. Welcome back Erik and keep up the good work! [tup]

I vote for the picture of the engineer with an earring in Fred Frailey’s latest blog.

Wow, the quality of photos is getting better and better, all of these are very good. Andy’s was the most unique with the train bending over the topography. i also love the midwest and early mornings.

…After quite a bit of comparing…I narrowed it down to Erik’s and Alex’s rendition. Choosing one, I chose Alex’s .

Edit: Correction…Wrote name {Steve} as winner…Senior moment.

I gotta hand it to Alex…the guy just wins. This week, he might just miss out on victory, but he’s always up front. Even with this shot - he happens to stick his head out the door and low and beyond, there’s the St. Louis skyline, Amtrak logo, and bright sunlight reflecting off his car. Well played. And for this week’s winner (maybe)…Erik, welcome back my friend. Tell me this shot was part of a sequence and you didn’t just time it this way. Either way, nice timing! You got any recent shots? Oh, by the way, Yuhas is still sad you left. And Andy…I actually voted for your shot. And for a while I regretted it because I had 0% of the votes going into Monday evening. But simply put, what a shot!

I voted for Alex’s image. I liked the way the reflecting sun makes the arc on the side of the Superliner. Combine that with the way the elements line up with the approaching bridge and the sun in the distance and he has the winner.
