Tinted passenger windows

Hi,
Looking for ideas on how to give my Walthers passenger car windows a more prototypical green tint. I was thinking of maybe a tinted clear styrene sheet behind the existing windows, but can’t seem to find anything like it, or perhaps I’m not looking in the right places.
Any success stories on how to do this and products used would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Rob

I haven’t tried doing anything like tenting windows, but one idea would be to put a little dark green in some clear paint and spray a little on the backs of the windows. I’d suggest trying it on some thin, clear plastic from the bubbles used for packaging things in stores like batteries.

Go to your local office supply store, and get a trasnparent Report Cover.

Ran out to Staples and got the transparent dividers (didn’t have covers, but same material). Wow…looks super!! And such an easy solution! Don’t know why I never thought of that. Live and learn…Thanks much!

Rob,
Not sure what RR you are modeling, but many of the lines used a ‘gray’ tint in their windows(CB&Q used the gray tint in their dome windows). The C&NW used a green tint after rebuilding, this was done to get rid of the individual ‘blinds’ for each window(maintenace expense item).

Hi, I asked this question on the U.K. railway modellers web, yesterday, for a rake of Con-Cor Amtrak Superliners . Mainly to hide the fact that there are no interiors. Anyway I managed to split the roof and glazing from the body and using a large tipped permanent marker in black, I did the outside of the glazing. When I reassembled them they looked brilliant. I would think the same could be done with other coloured markers. Hope this is of some help.

Check out the link below. You will have to buy the transperancy sheets, but I have printed these out and they look great!! I got the transperancy sheets at Office Max. You may want to read through all of this link, but the meat and potatos oare on the last couple of pages.

Candy colored model car paint is transparent, and can be sprayed from the inside of the windows to tint them in a variety of colors. This will work great on Vista Dome windows that would be tough to do with the office supply dividers/covers.

mad_druid,

how exactly did you get them open?

I have five of them that I would love to add some interior details to.

Do them come apart without any damage?

Railway Classics in Mn. offers both dome windows and clear sheets in green tint. They’re not cheap, I think the dome windows retail at $5 and the flat sheet at $10 but there’s enough on one sheet for 11 cars.

How about that self-adhesive tinting film that people like to apply to their 1:1 scale car windows? Comes in a big roll, if it’s suitable in terms of density and shade than it could be a good way to do a batch of car windows in the same colour. Hope this is of help!
