Tip: HO Diesel Locomotive Shop that doesn't take up too much space.. Photo Links provided

I agree Greg. Seaboard Coast Line Railroad had a similar yellow platform assembly at its locomotive service shop in Tampa (Uceta Yard) back in the 1970s. I visited this yard several times then. Even with the grime on it, that Safety Yellow color always stood out.

Hello Crew.

Not too long ago some of our fellow modelers were looking for HO Diesel Loco Servicing buildings.

Basic complaints:

Walthers retired their nice looking Back Shop and Car Shop kits (why?) and if you want one you have to go hunting on Ebay.

The new Walthers Diesel Loco Shop kit is nice, but larger and might not work for modelers with limited space on the layout.

Here’s an option I noticed while browsing Walthers and Ebay.

As you know the Bachmann Plus "Locomotive Maintenance Building" (out of production) is an attractive looking brick building with 2 stalls and big windows. Fits in any era from the 1950s thru today. It was made by Heljan for Bachmann. This kit now pops up on Ebay from time to time and sometimes has gone for $50+.

While browing, I discovered that “today”, Heljan produces the “Railroad Wash Facility” building kit. IT’S THE SAME BUILDING! Nice, large windows with some slight differences on the outside. Very easy to modify into a loco shop building. It’s in stock and available from Walthers for $31.98 MSRP. (you can probably get it at a discount) On the Walthers web page It’s part #322-1886.

The Fuel and/or Sanding Rack will complement this and other diesel shop kits.

I would suggest the old Suydam (now Alpine kit #522) Diesel House, this is the two bay building of cardstock and wood construction. IMHO when completed a great looking shop facility.

I bashed two together to add stalls

and I added the sanding rack to my coaling tower

I put a small diesel shop on my layout.

It is kitbashed from an Atlas steam round house.

I might get one; I have a small locomotive shop on my layout, or I might get just one rack second-hand to use at my teeny-tiny loco servicing facility at my Concord, NH yard. Unfourtunatly, my facility can only fit 2 road-switchers at a time, but I have a ready track too.

Thanks for posting those links. Enough can’t be said about the quality of work and detail you put into your layout. If it hasn’t appeared in an MRR issue, it certainly should!
