I just finished adding the detail parts to my new Kato P42 locomotive. I just pushed the parts into place using the pre-drilled holes without any adhesive, and they seem to hold pretty well.
Can I just leave it like that or should I use glue? The parts are SO SMALL and so difficult to place that I’m afraid I’d leave CA trails all over my new loco if I tried using glue. On the other hand, I would hate to lose those parts. They are so tiny that if they fell off I’d probably never find them.
are the bits in well enough so you can shake the model without them falling out
(please dont try this just estimate it, if so i dont think CA is nessacerray)
You can put a tiny drop of CA on the part(s) in question with the pointy end of a pin… Don’t dispense form the bottle, no matter how small the tip appears to be… [;)]
it’s best to not use glue, especially not super glue. Kato craftsmanship is so good that the handrails should stay on without glue. Even their instructions tell you this. If you use glue and break one of the handrails, replacing it will be more difficult because you must then drill out the remaining pieces, and the holes will be so large that you will have no option but to continue using glue on everything.
OK, two out of three say no glue and one only gives a good idea if you do glue. I don’t glue anything unless it’s absolutely necessary. If you feel it needs to be glued, I would do it from the back side if possible. In other words if the mounting holes go all the way through the engine or car body, use a very small amount, like Masonjar stated, and apply it to the back side. With this in mind, I have on occasion, used tape on the inside instead of glue. Anyhow, I try to think ahead: if a part becomes broken, can I get a replacement part, and will I have to chop up the model to do the replacement ??
