To Selector and Midnight Railroader

Seeing that I can’t reply to your comments in the locked thread, “The Aftermath”, I’ll just post a reply to you guys here. The “widget” that you refer to in my signature shows your ISP and IP address only to you, not to anyone else. When I see a post of mine on this site, it shows me my ISP and IP address and such info, not anyone else’s. If you take the time to read about such things you’ll realize that your IP info and such if flying around the www when you visit any site. Go ahead and click on the “widget” and read for yourself, learn something.

Now to you mods, do with this thread as you see fit.

Why would you want to put your own IP address out there for all to see??

No real reason other than just a reminder that we’re not as protected as we all think we are. Besides, I can’t see your info and you can’t see mine, so there’s no invasion of privacy being commited.

So, that little widget I see in your sig isn’t showing me YOUR real IP address? I know it’s not showing me MY address. So that’s just some random address???[%-)]

I guess its really no worse than someone standing on the sidewalk in front of your house holding up a sign saying, “You live in such and such a house on this street, and your IP is Shaw.” Creepy, but thanks.

I don’t know what you’re seeing but if you don’t see your real info then maybe you have a router or a firewall of some sort. I know the IP I see for my computer isn’t the correct one either and I am routered with a firewall, my ISP is correct though.

I win!

it thinks I’m in Germany… proxies for all! Granted if I shut off my proxy, it’ll drop back to my true ISP. If you don’t believe the sign, go to http://whatismyip.com and check it out…

if your computer IP is 192.168.x.x it just means you’re sitting on a private network. The IP range 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255 is a class B private network (though most home routers only hand out the class C 192.168.0.x or 192.1698.1.x private network by default).

you could potentially have something in the 10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255, or 172.16.0.0 – 172.31.255.255 which are class A and class B private networks, respectively (technically the 172.x.x.x is 16 consecutive class B networks)… and now that I’ve bored everyone out of their skulls…

has anyone seen the ads for the ?

NeO…you are the one. Follow the rabbit.

Yeah, that’s not my IP address OR my service provider. It gets the OS system and the IE versions right between my two computers, but not the other info. I’m not using any proxy either.

Sorry, but I’m TOTALLY confused. What in the name of Bill Gates are you people talking about?

Tom [:O]

While the little fuzzball thing holding the sign does show my infomation I aready know this. So the point is mute and just a useless toy.

A person has this little thingie in his signature: http://www.danasoft.com/

Spooked out a couple of other people. Totally harmless - a non-event.

Grin,
Stein

I have seen this before on other forums and its old news. For me, it does not show correct info re the number or provider. And I already know the version of Firefox I run and what OS, so it is of no use to me.

Now back to the trains…[8D]

Actually more like the mail in your mailbox has all the information on it of who lives there and what your address is… BTW the little widgit has my info perfect…[;)]

You think this is bad, wait till we have to go over to IPv6

psssst… I think it’s geek talk but really don’t know as my “universal translator” can’t translate this into any discernable language. [%-)]

I have to ask… What’s a Widget?

They come in many varieties. I have a dual purpose one the I use to install muffler bearings and fill the blinker fluid on my cars.

Ah, lets see… I have the definition right here someplace. Yes, here it is. A widget is a little thingy that doesn’t really do anything useful but is fun to have around. Also known as a “Doo dad” or “Thingamabob”. Actually my Grandmother told me when I was quite young that they were called “Whatchmacallits” in New England when she was a little girl back in the late 1800’s.

I will be be scratchbuilding a Widget factory using a RTR Plasticville thingamabob, aka: widget sometime this winter. [swg]

Hope this is helpful to you Fergie.

Actually, it’s more like someone standing on the sidewalk holding a mirror with the phrase “This is what you look like” printed on it.
