To strip paint, that is the question...

I’ve spent the last several years assembling/superdetailing/kitbashing/painting/decaling a number of prototype specific cabooses, milk reefers, coal cars, etc. Looking in my box of unbuilt kits, I see a number of IMWX, Branchline, Red Caboose, and Tichy kits. It’s time to dig them out and get going.

Most of the kits are already painted and decaled, so I don’t have to strip paint/repaint/decal. What a concept! There ARE some, such as Tichy and Eastern Car Works, that are unpainted. For those kits, I plan to airbrush the kit parts before assembly.

Reading the instructions, I’m told to scrape the paint off any areas to be glued. Yet there is no mention of having to do that for the prepainted kits.

This seems to be a disconnect. I use Tenax 7R and Faller Expert glues (and ACC for plastics sometimes). With the solvent glues, is it really necessary to remove paint from the parts? If so, why no recommendation to do that with the prepainted kits?

I try to strip off as much factory paint as possible on my kits that are prepainted. You get a better “weld” that way. Why they don’t tell you to do it? I don’t have a clue.
