1989: French TGV train reaches world speed record of 482.4 KPH ( kilometers per hour )…
Which leads to a few questions…
How fast is this figure in miles per hour?
Does this record still hold?
What is the record in North America?
Anybody else?
Thanks once again to the vast resources of nanaimo73, for help on this date. I never want to be his opponent on Jeopardy[:D]
301.5 MPH (1 km is approximately 0.625 miles)
Thanks-I knew the conversion rate was sometning close to 5/8 (.625). Trouble is, I was dividing instead of multiplying. Somehow, I knew the answer shouldn’t be 772 MPH. That would have to be approaching the speed of sound. ( The train would allready be past the crossing, when you here the horn![;)])
No, this record does not still stand.
On May 18 1990 a TGV trainset attained a speed of 515.26 km/h (just over 320 mph), this record still stands.
