today in non railroad history

25 years ago today, December 8th, 1980, John Lennon was shot and killed outside his apartment by Mark David Chapman, thinking Lennon had become a sellout.
Today we mourn the loss of one of music’s greatest men.

H’mm why was not anything mentioned yesterday about 12/07/41 when the Japs sneak attacked us @ Pearl Harbor? Far more important event then the John Lennon affair. [:(]

Imagine there’s no Heaven
It’s easy if you try
No Hell below us
Above us only sky.

Imagine all the people
Living for today …

Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too

Imagine all the people
Living life in peace …

You, you may say I am a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one.

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man

Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world …

You, you may say I am a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one.

John Lennon

A lot of us will remember John in our thoughts. When with the Beatles, he and the band laid the ground work to make rock n roll more popular.

On this date in 1951 I was born[:)].

I was watching Monday Night Football when Howard Cosell announced the “unspeakable tragedy.” I braced myself for news of a major earthquake with thousands of deaths, or perhaps am accidental nuclear detonation. What a letdown . Not a politician, not the pope, not the queen, but a common musician met an untimely death at the hands of an assassin. Sure he was a talented and noteworthy celebrity, but John Lennon’s death was no more “unspeakable” than any other of that day. For example Steve McQueen, Mae West, Colonel Sanders and Marshall McLuhan all died within a month of Lennon. Personally I liked the Beatles, but Kentucky Fried Chicken seems to have more staying power.

Difference is, Lennon was shot during his great career, and he was a genius, while colenal sanders could cook chicken.
I am suprised at how this went from mourning a great man to a lot of happy birthday postws. But what the heck! [bday]
