-The people. It isn’t like work, the hours just fly by.
-The atmosphere. Surrounded by the hobby always puts a smile on my face.
-The help. I enjoy helping people, and I love to be able to do it within our hobby.
-The discount. Employees get everything (and anything hobby related) at cost.
-First shot. I get ‘dibs’ on new items in the store.
-The extra exposure for my services. I am a custom sound/DCC installer and painter. I am being advertised (next month in MR hopefully) as an on-site consult. This is where my money is made.
Your making the job sound very appealing. It would be the perfect Job. Get paid for what you do in your free time for fun. How much do you make? I would just spend my paychecks on stuff at the store
I make a nominal per-hour fee, but my coin comes from DCC installs and painting. Considering you can make 50-70 per Sound install (depending on the loco) and 100-400 per painting contract, you can see how quickly the money adds up.
The LHS’s say to me that they cannot support a payroll. Therefore they continue to do the best they can with what they have and they seem to be doing ok.
I would not mind working in one very much, time would not exist as I understand it the hours will fly by very quickly.
Or very slowly when everything is done and we sit waiting for the front door to open or the phone to ring.
In fact, some customers around my area demand the hobby shop to be open at Walmart 24/7 style hours for a bottle of paint right away and right now regardless of time of day.
I probably would not accept a paycheck, but take my pay in trains stuff from the store. But where would that leave the owner? Where would the gas money come from? And finally what do I do with the Tax man at the end of the year? Pay him in plastic couplers by the box?
50-70 [:O] I would do that in a heart beat. I didn’t know they charge that much to put in a simple decoder. I could see how time would fly and money could add up. I would get a part time job like that too support my Hobby.
That would be great if I lived in an area that actually had some hobby shops. I’ve never seen a LHS that was big enough to employ more than 2-3 family members.
