I have a MRC “Synch Diesel Sound 1658 for Kato F-3” n scale decoder and have been unable to reduce the top speed setting to a level which matches other F-3’s with other decoders (or is even close to the top speed of these others).
The instructions indicate I should use CV-5, but no matter how low I set CV-5 (I’ve set it to 0, and 1 and to 50), the loco top speed does not come down to the level of my Intermountain or other non-sound F-3’s.
This is the only MRC decoder I have, so I thought there might be a trick to using them that I’m not aware of.
Wouldn;t surprise me if they didn;t work right, being an MRC decoder, but what normally goes for CV5 is that it has to be bigger than CV2 and, if the decoder has it, CV6. Otherwise it tends to be ignored and treated liek it’s set to 0 or 255.
So a value of 0 or 1 is almost definitely out. Depending on where you had to set CV2 to get the loco to start, 50 might be too low for CV5. And if the decoder supports CV6 for mid speed, then you will need to set that as well.
Randy: Just as follow up. I took the Decoder to my local hobby shop, and they diagnosed it as “bad”. I sent it back to the online place I bought it (no problem returning it - Model Train Stuff.com ) Waiting for a replacement. I’m hopeful that was the problem. I have another which works fine.
Randy et al: This post was in error. I did get one replaced as faulty, but the other one runs fine EXCEPT for the fact that the high speed won’t come down.
