Cisco Kid:
Nice paint job! Great work on the handrails and decals too!
I do have a question. How are you going to integrate the Bangor and Aroostook loco into operations in western Canada? I’m not being critical, I just want to know the storey.
Dave
It’s easy Dave, there was an unexpected run on French Fries in Cisco and adjoining areas and a large consignment of the finest Maine potatoes were needed in a hurry!!! Bangor and Aroostook RR BL2 #52 and the red, white, and blue boxcars to the rescue!![dinner][:-^]
Nice work Cisco Kid.
Cheers, the Bear.[:)]
Cisco Kid,
Very nice job. I’m glad to not be alone loving BL-2’s! I have always thought they were cool looking units. Having ridden them several times in the yards at Hagerstown, MD on the WM I have special spot for them.
I model the WM so naturally have 2 units. I always lamented that they never bought more of them. They look great in BAR colors too.
Thanks for sharing it with us!

Thanks for the nice feedback.
Ah, you mention bringing in potatoes. That is a bit like “coals to Newcastle” here where I am…near to Pemberton, BC where I worked for years.
Pemberton is a certified seed potato area. Ok, you can bring in potatoes to eat, but not for your garden. There are actually potato police who have the authority to come over and rip out your potato plants to protect the purity of the zone…and I have seen it done.
No one is going to let those questionable Maine potatoes around here. Well, just to eat. Don’t try getting all horticultural with them.
But thanks. I did learn a lot from reading up about the BAR. I see it did have a connection with the railroad in Quebec and unfortunately with the Lac Megantic crash, in an historical way.
The fact that you picked what I consider to be EMD’s homeliest offering doesn’t detract one bit from the very nice job you did on it. [tup][tup]
I suppose the runner-up in the above category, the low-nose GP30, will be your next project? [:P][;)] The CPR had a couple.
Wayne
Love the BL2.
What did you use to thin the Krylon?
CG
Lacquer thinner.
Thanks.

Dr. Wayne…I’m totally shocked that you don’t see beauty in the low nose GP-30. Maybe it’s the Chessie paint scheme, but it is one of my favorites.
Bob
Sorry, Bob, but I’ve never cared for the appearance of the low-nose GP30, nor for the Chessie paint scheme…even on the T-1, which is a locomotive which I otherwise do like.
Wayne
I worked for Chessie, and we hated that paint scheme. They looked like circus wagons.
Wayne
First you disparaged my GP-30 and now you have added insult to injury by putting down the Chessie paint scheme.
Realizing that our rr modeling is a constant learning experience I’m sure you and Hobo will come to appreciate the beauty of this locomotive.
Bob
A bit off topic, IMHO I think the Chessie scheme ranks right up there with the Daylight and Warbonnet schemes. Icons.
The BL-2 and GP-30 have seemed to always invoke observations of dislike. Even the designer didnt like the BL design. I rather favor them. If you want an ugly diesel, look at anything made after 1980! Safety cabs, gensets, etc. Good grief now those are some fugly looking locos!
On topic - nice work on the model. You did a fine job! I like it.
PM Railfan
Hey, Bob, don’t put words in my mouth. [:D] I don’t dislike your GP30, but rather all GP30s with low noses. And not a put-down of the Chessie paint scheme, either - I don’t care for it, but I’m not in the habit of criticising anybody’s tastes.
You may be right, Bob…as they say, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. However, at this point in time, low-nose GP30s and the Chessie paint scheme, rather than beauty, feel more like a thumb in my eye. [;)] [:P]
EDIT:
I actually don’t mind the Warbonnet scheme, but not too fond of the Daylight scheme at all, and especially on steam. For Espee diesels, I do like the “bloody nose” version, though.
As for the Chessie scheme being iconic, it’s my opinion that C&O/Chessie changed their paint schemes more often than most people change their socks - none were ever around long enough to reach that status. Besides that, I haven’t yet decided to forgive C&O for their takeover of the Pere Marquette.
I do railfan CSX, though, and consider the paint scheme below to be preferable to the Chessie scheme (even if it’s on a boxy diesel with a safety cab) [:-^] :
…and on my layout, the C&O is still around…

Well, I for one really like the low nose Gp30s. I have always felt that they really looked like they meant bussiness. Ready to do the job. I have three of them.
But the Sharks, I don’t care for them, never have.
Just my opinion, not trying to change yours.
Johnboy out…
Perceptions may change over time: initially, I didn’t like the Sharks, either, but wouldn’t mind seeing (and hearing) one running now, especially if it were wearing NYC lightning stripes.
The low nose GP30 reminds me of late '50s automobiles…perhaps a '58 Chev or Pontiac. I don’t mind seeing those old cars at a car show, but didn’t care much for them at all when they were new. (I drove an early '50s car as my first.) High hood GP30s are fine with me, though.
F- and E- units were okay, but FAs were better and FPAs the epitome of cab units. Oddly enough, I wasn’t overly enamoured with the PA, nor Baby-faced Baldwins, C-Liners, or Erie-Builts, but all rank in the “okay” category nowadays.
I perhaps should have listed the BL1/2 as my second least liked EMDs and put the low-nose GP30 in third place…but that would have put the Aerotrain in the top least-liked spot, even though it was actually a bus on rails. [+o(]
Anyway, Kid, as I said in my original post, nice job on the paint and lettering on your BL2, despite the unfortunate fact that EMD’s design team dropped the ball…the F-unit must’ve exhausted their good sense. [;)]
Wayne
Wasnt this threah about BAR BL2’s?
You betcha! That’s why I brought it back there in the post prior to yours. A little wanderin’ never hurt anybody, I think, and anybody had as much opportunity to bring things back on topic.
Wayne
Been away for a while.
Thanks for all the nice comments and interesting observations on design and paint scheme.
I don’t know what it is about BL2s but they have been one of my favorite models since I began the hobby again 10 or so years ago. Perhaps it was because until I bought my first one, I had no idea such a design had been in production. And my Monon BL2 was the first model I bought. I had no idea there was such a railroad as well. I guess the novelty of the new knowledge grabbed me. I have 7 now and they are my ugly beauties.
