1218

I know that the N&W 611 was put in a museum, but happened to N&W 1218?

It is also in the Museum. They’re both under cover. I understand that they’ve put the rods back on it and it’s virtually complete; when they did the advertisement with it some of the rods had not been applied.

Both the 611 and 1218 are side by side in a shelter outside at the Virginia Museum of Transpotation in Roanoke, VA.

I rode behind the J from Jax, FL to Valdosta, GA in '85. The next year they were to run the 1218 but I didn’t get to go. Anyway, after the trip behind the J, we drove to Cordele, GA where my in-laws were keeping my infant daughter. While there, I heard a steam whistle and ran outside where I could see the Norfolk Southern tracks a block away. A flash of shiny black with a maroon stripe - the 611 - flashed by at the head end of a freight train. It seemed to be going faster than it was pulling the Pullmans.

DOGGY

Very Happy 4 year old visiting 611 on March 13. He adores the engine, and can easily pick it out of a crowd. In fact, he’s so excited, his head is a blur… The parents are good friends of my daughter. The visit to VMT was part of his birthday gift.

I love to see kids choosing steam trains so young.
