I’m not so sure that the re-routing of Brainard Avenue and 130th Street in conjunction with the grade crossing elimination is going to sit too well with the neighborhood. Having grown up just beyond the right edge of the photograph showing the existing situation, I’m aware that 130th Street is a major exit point for that part of Hegewisch. The proposal appears to have the part of 130th east of the former CWI right-of-way end at Saginaw Avenue, required a routing over residential streets to get to Brainard Avenue.

Looking at the linked pdf of the proposal, it seems 130th St will meet Brainard Ave directly at the intersection with Torrence…

What Paul is commenting on is the fact that 130th used to continue east of the Brainerd intersection to serve that residential area. I heard from another source that that stretch of 130th will curve to the south somewhere and a new intersection with Brainerd. I expect a few buildings would be lost with that move.

What’s shown is very impressive, though…I didn’t realize that the old C&WI right-of-way was so prominent through here still.

South of the South Shore overpass, the ex-NKP main has been moved over to the CWI right-of-way for about a mile to accommodate expansion of the loading area for auto-racks and haulaway trucks. Torrence Avenue between about 130th Street and the foot of the Calumet River bridge was also moved onto the CWI right-of-way because of expansion of the Ford plant.
