ideas on how to mount tortoise switch machines using 2" foam as a layout base
awww shucks
[:I][:I]
I locate the throw bar and draw a line perpendicular to the track centerline. then offset it 1/8" and make a 2 1/4" square hole through the foam. come back to the actuator line and draw a 3 1/8" square from that line. I use 1/4" plywood 3" square, so recess the foam 1/4" so that the plywood is flush with the foam on top. I pre-drill the tortoise screw hole layout on the bottom of the plywood before gluing the plywood down in the foam with clear silicone adhesive. You could also use liquid nails. I use about 8" wires from the tortoise to a 2 terminal block that I leave hanging down for connection to control. It makes it easier if you need to reverse the wires or replace the tortoise in the future.
thanks for the info.
Oh, another point. for crossovers, connect both tortoises to the same terminal block, and actuate them both from the same switch. That way you will never experience the thrill of having a short or derail at a crossover.
