Tourist Trains Guidebook, Fifth Edition

This is a great book to buy and It is worth reading. It gives you all the information you would need to know about the different tourist railroads and railroad museums in the United States and Canada you can go and see. I enjoy reading it because it is that type of book that gives you where you would railroad museum you would like to go to and the perfect tourist railroad you would like to ride on. Every bit of information is here for your reading enjoyment. This book I have enjoyed reading since 1989 when I bought my first copy at a meeting of the Utica and Mohawk Valley Chapter of the National Railway Histroical Society back then. I enjoy reading it and I get some ideas for a trip I might like to do which might have railroading involved. The Tourist Train Guide Book is a book that has everything you need to know about what would be the best tourist railroad to go to.

I purchased this book because I love trains and train excursions and my wife and I travel a lot. We have already chosen several excursion we are going to do next time we travel near them. Unfortunately we received our copy after we returned from a recent trip to Central Ohio. Had we had it before the trip we would have had several train locations to visit. It will surely be with me on my next trip.

This guide is full of information about train rides and museums. It includes info on many attractions that many people may not know existed. I purchased it as an update to the third edition. I was, however, disappointed in one feature in the third edition that was not included in this fifth edition. The third edition had maps in the back that showed where the attractions were in a particular state or province along with a number that matched the description in the main body. It was a great help in showing if a particular attraction was in the area of your travels. There are no maps in the fifth edition. You will require a road map or google maps to see where most of the attractions are. I will probably take both editions on my travels.
It is, however, a good guide that lists a lot of rail related attractions. It lists a lot of attractions that a person might not be aware of and just drive by, even though they may be just minutes away. A good buy.

When will this be in digital form I travel frequently and with an iPad I can carry all my information please digitize this book and it will be purchased the pages that are digitised as a sample are brilliant you can see and read all

A great reference, even included the tiny museums in my area,

Great book to have when you are traveling. As always looking for the tourist railroads and have used previous books to a great advantage.

This invaluable for trips in pa.,md.,ny.,and nj.

Australia is a long way from anywhere even in these days of fast travel. It’s vital not only to do your homework before you leave but to get the best guides possible. This fabulous little book is an absolute Gem and I sure wish I’d had similar books or this one on previous Trips to The States.
Hopefully we’ll put this to good use in the near future. I wish our Box Head of a Government down here would start investing in our Rail Heritage but I fear most of it will be gone before they wake up. Cheers to all the U P and W P Nuts, Denis.

moving to Tennessee in a few weeks looking forward to checking out all the RR stuff. This book is a great aid. I had an earlier edition, used it a lot.

Going to Spearfish SD in September via Denver, and I found the information in this book to be outstanding about Railroad sites and museums in the area. I will stop in Cheyenne to see the Depot Museum and ride the Black Hills Central In Hill City SD.

I have now purchased 3 editions of this book as they have been updated over time. I have found them to be invaluable when planning rail fan vacations. My wife and I have used the books to help plan vacations in New Hampshire, Colorado, West Virginia, and South Dakota. I have begun planning our vacation for 2016 using the fifth edition (2015) of the book. As I was flipping through the pages, I noticed something was missing. I went back to my second edition book and immediately realized what it was. The second edition has a series of state maps that showed the general geographic location of all the attractions in the book. I found this to be a great help in determining where the attractions were and which ones could be visited in one trip. Circles and squares were also used to indicate whether the attraction was a museum, depot, or offered a train ride. I know Map Quest and Google maps are very popular and easy to use, but I found it very convenient to simply flip back to the pages with the maps of the states and quickly determine which attractions could be grouped together for one trip. I find myself using the second addition more than the new fifth edition for this reason. But with the fifth addition having an additional 70 attractions listed, I keep wondering if I am going to miss one of the new attractions in my planning. I would ask that you reconsider including the state maps in the next addition of this fine book.

Have owned several of these books over the years. Don’t travel in this country with out one. It is especially valuable when trying to find something in an area where you are just passing through. Also helps when planning a trip.
