I don’t understand why one-time movements would be such a problem for the town.
If CMR doesn’t own the tracks, they’d better start looking for another location. They can’t win this one. Too bad.
They need to take their engine and push that dump truck off the tracks and down into the woods… Why do people think that they have a right make hiking trails out of railroad lines?

Outrageous! I’d like to see comments by the FRA and the FBI! Arrest the Mayor on terrorism charges and send him to Guantanamo as a. Example to twisted reckless governments elsewhere.

Very sad indeed…
The walking trail thru Sarnia, Ontario past Bright’s Grove, Ontario is littered with animal feces, garbage and is a hang out for drinking and toking by youths…
A dismal failure…
A short line would have been a better option;
Once rail disappears it’s horrendous to get it back and likely not possible to do so… ie: real estate developers build on the right of way(s)…
And now we see the true colors of the rails to trials [sic intentional] groups. Is the mayor and the trails group going to compensate the railroad for the improvements they made to the track? Somehow, I doubt it.
Actually the line is not owned by the Catskill Mountain Railroad but rather by Ulster County which in turn leased it to the railroad.
The mayor’s premise as to closing the line is to prevent the railroad from refurbishing two passenger cars because they may have lead paint. There are EPA procedures for removing lead base paint. Apparently the city (read mayor) was concerned that those EPA approved procedures would not be followed. So using that as an excuse a dump truck is blocking the track.
They need to find a way to become a common carrier. That will fu__ up the trails movement. Maybe a motor car with a box (think Galloping Goose)and offer package service. Any way to get some fed rules to take the dictator mayor out of the loop. Or if I read between the lines pay the bastard off.
As for the lead paint that is BS too.
The reality is in that neck of the woods they are looking at it becoming a snowmoble trail in the winter and a local place will sell the snowmobiles. Day trippers will hit the local gas station for gas and beer and then go home. In the summer it will be ATV’s , dirt bikes and very few walkers or bicyclists because the motorozed people drive at about 50 MPH. I see it all the time here in New Hampshire.
Forrest Gump said it best: “Stupid is as stupid does”.
I would not necessarily blame “liberals” I consider myself a liberal but I am very much pro-rail as are many of my liberal friends. This comes down to NIMBY’s who don’t want noise from a train disturbing them so they are gunning for a trail that will probably be lightly used.
In the words of the immortal Forrest Gump, “Stupid is as stupid does.”
Breach of contract here. Sue the pants off of them. Rail excursions would bring more tourist dollars here than any trail.
Mayor of Kingston Shayne Gallo is an abusive idiot. See this:

Typical politician!
The problem here isn’t the railroad and likely not most of the local population, it is the ‘environmental’ wackos from the City and their political minions. New York is full of monied liberal weekenders who flee Manhattan apartments on Friday for their upstate cottages. They spend Saturday hiking, running, and cycling, or playing farmer in their little garden patches. They meet their Manhattan friends for dinner at local restaurants and spend the evening complaining about the lack of ‘decent’ trails and how ‘tourists’ are ruining ‘their’ countryside. To these liberal snobs railroads are an unnecessary and unwanted intrusion.
