Great to see a town fighting for “their” railroad, instead of the NIMBY “get that thing out of here” attitude that too often is present (i.e.; New Brunswick, Maine; Twin Cities Southwest LRT; etc.)

Sounds like it’s time for a new tourist line to supplement the operating income?
Mr. Kelly,
The line actually had a tourist operation, with steam, in the 1970s on the more scenic (and now abandoned) section between Snowflake and McNary, the White Mountain Scenic RR. That operation suffered from its relatively remote location. Although Holbrook is near the scenic Painted Desert and Petrified Forest National Monuments and the Meteor Crater, the line from Holbrook to Snowflake is nowhere near as scenic as the nearby Grand Canyon Scenic and Verde Canyon Railroads–unless, of course, you’re outside the train shooting immaculately-maintained green-and-white Alcos in perfect sunshine…
38 miles is ideal for a tourist line.
Wouldn’t the STB have to approve abandonment?
Closed down the mill and moved the work elsewhere … wanting to scrap the railroad for a one-time financial shot in the arm … symbolic of so much of what is wrong in big-corporation America …
I will bet that virtually NONE of the hedge fund executives had ever seen the terrible effect their actions have on a locality. Stone (previous owner) did the same thing in Michigan on the end of the E&LS. Until we start
treating white-collar theft & abuse as crime punishable by imprisonment in high security prisons, nothing will change!
Is Engine #82 (formerly Tennessee Central #400) still operating? There are many who would like to bring it home and restore the original 1968 as-delivered colors.
Ed, they wouldn’t care even if they bothered to learn. All rural people are toothless hicks to them. I don’t care what kind of prisons they get put in, as long as they do some REAL time.
