Track Cleaning Box Car

I have a small layout with some hard to reach track

I dont want to spend a lot for a track cleaning car

Looked at Herpa Box cleaning box car with cleaning pad $20

Has anyone used this brand car cleaner and does it work well

Never heard of them,

but the armstrong (or was it allen?) method of masonite pad under a junk (trainset-quality) boxcar should only cost you about $12 or so…

works quite well too [:D][tup]

I have 3 Trainline cleaning box cars, I no longer use a bright boy or any other method of track cleaning. Cost is around $13.00, money well spent. If track is real nasty I use one as a pusher and two as drags. One will do you just fine, reason I have three is because I have 3 main lines.

There are lots of different manufacturers of the famous boxcar track cleaner. Look for one that has a bit of weight to it. I prefer my CMX Clean Machine though.

I have the Walthers Trainline track cleaner boxcar. It sells for $15.95 and works fairly well. Walthers sells replacement cleaning pads that could be modified to fit about any freight car.

If using a liquid track cleaning process DO NOT use Goo-Gone as it makes keeping your track clean a problem. Goo-Gone leaves a film on the rails that attracts dirt I use mineral spirits on a rag in addition to the Walthers car.

This what your talking about?

Make sure you can get replacement pads for what ever you get.
Here’s a bunch of different ones in case you want to compare them.

As far as cleaning fluids go, there has been quite a bit about the usefulness of good ol’ Automatic Transmission Fluid in the NMRA pub Scale Rails.

I have seen the Walthers Trainline version and it works very well. If you cannot find one at the LHS check Ebay, there always seems to be one on there and go for about 10-15 bucks.

Here is one that went on Ebay yesterday for just over 9 bucks and free shipping…you can’t beat that!

The Walthers UP plug door box with slider is on sale ($3.00 off list) until the end of November. If your LHS doesn’t stock it, you can order direct - but you WILL have to pay shipping unless you order a total of $130.00.

I noticed it while skimming that catalog for kitbash fodder. Found some, too.
