What programs or products do you recommend to help me design my layout?
Interested in internet available PC programs (if they are simple enough) or products I can buy at my local train store.
I have the space I need all ready to go and a general idea of what I want it to look like, But I’m sure if I just start laying track I’m doomed to failure.
Your recommendations are appreciated…
Basic freeware is Right Track Software from Atlas: http://www.atlasrr.com/ click on RTS on the left side.
Atlas program is free and easy to use. Also more CAD programs if you want to go through the learning curve. LDSig chat list on Yahoo.
One thing you should really do is get the book “Track Planning for Realistic Operation” as most consider it the “bible” of track planning. Tons of great advice and ideas.

Track Planning for Realistic Operation is a must. You should also visit the local hobby shop and pick up Model Railroad Planning – lots of practical information in it. Try to get back issues as well. Take a look atand Great Model Railroads as well.
Personally, I read through Kalmbach’s 101 track plans, an Atlas Track plan book & lots of Model Railroader Magazines to design my layout’s track plan.
I really got inspiration from Kalmbach’s #52 Track Plan “Wisconsin Central” & a track plan I saw in MR’s April 2001 issue Steve Flanigan’s Georgia Southern.
I took ideas from both of these sources to come up with the track plan I have now & still improving.
One thing I did learn, just because it looked good on paper, I may not work in the space I have.
