track layout

I have a 3’6" x 8’ board. I want to run a single track line along the back of the board and at both ends of the track I want to loop it back to it self so I can use the same single track line. I do not want to make an oval. can this be done? The train willbe running down the track in one direction and then loop back going in the opposite direction on the same track. What would I need to do this?
Thanks

Yes it can be done. You will have reverse loops on both ends which becomes a special wiring process that I myself have tried to stay away from cause its a pain in the behind. There are several books out there that will show you how to wire reverse loops.
Good luck

You haven’t specified the scale you intend to use but let’s say you will use “N” scale, and with 9 3/4 min. radius turnarounds plus the opposite curve, that means that approximately 4 feet of straight track will be left.Much less in HO.Let’s say you wire these reverse loops and switch them manually, you’ll be so busy that I believe you won’t enjoy your layout very long. However, you could visit Loy’s Toys site, they sell automatic polarity reversing units which could be handy.
My idea would be the oval,as it is much simpler to build and operate, and if you don’t want to see it all, well hide the second leg under/behind scenery. My opinion…
