Either measurement can be what you want, but in HO scale, typically, the centres would be about 2.5" apart. That works out to 18’, I would think around 2-3’ wider than they would be in real life.
I do mine at 2" center to center on straight track and 2 1/2 '“on curves…you can go to 1 1/2” in a yard but the problem is if it’s too close, your thumbs and fingers between the small space will knock adjacent cars off the tracks when you reach for rolling equipment…that’s why mine are 2" center to center in the yard… chuck
Thanks guys. That brings up another question. What switches and arrangements do you use go get the 2" spacing?
Standard Atlas track components like the ‘Custom Line’ turnouts use 2" centers when building a ladder…
Prototype railroad usually have between 13’-14’ track centers; after the mid 60’s there was a ICC order expanding that to 15’ on any new construction. 2" HO centers work out to 14’6" - very close. I use 2" centers, and expand that out on curves(usually 2 1/4" - 2 1/2" depending on the radius of the curve). Always ‘test’ with your biggest equipment!
