It’s not free but worth it. 3D Plan It
You can download the whole version for free to try it out but you can not save anything or use more than 100 items

XTrakCad v4.0.3 has been tested only on W/XP. W/2000 is pretty close to XP, especially if you have all of the service packs installed and updates, so it might work just fine. There is no cost to trying it,except for your time, as the package is free. Barring that, you could use XTrakCad v3 for prior versions of Windoze. However, v4.0.3 is the only supported version at this time.
Belated update: I have been running XTrakCad on XP Pro, which is much like W/2000 in feature and function. That’s why I think v4 should work under W/2000.
Windows 2000 is an interesting platform. Not a lot of companies support it with their products.
My personal favorite software program is Anyrail. Check it out here: http://www.anyrail.com/index_en.html.
It is not a CAD program, so it’s learning curve is very shallow. You can be whipping out layouts in half an hour. I really like two things about it: 1) It has a huge track library, in a variety of scales, including a lot I’ve never heard of, and 2) you can export designs to Trainplayer and see how they operate. It’s library of structures is very limited, but it compensates for that with a nice little drawing tool. Look at the Examples page of their website. I can tell you that there’s no fudging. All of those layouts were drawn with Anyrail.
You can download a trial version, which is the whole program, but it limits you to 50 items. The current version says it is for Windows XP, Vista, or 7. They are very responsive to e-mails, so if you asked them they could probably tell you.
