Track planning

I have just finished my layout room and am now ready for the planning stage. I have an 18x25 space with a 2x14 foot space in the laundry room for possible staging. Designing a track plan is not my forte, although building one is. My question is: are there modelers who could provide that service? Terms are negotiable. I know there are custom builders, but I want to build it myself, that’s the fun part! I just need help in the design phase. Any advice would be appreciated.

one thing you need to say is what scale… industries… sidings and stuff like that you would like.

I would do one for you if I had this information and the width of the tables you would like to use and stuff like that.

That’s a lot of space kinda wish I had that much space to work with.Only thing I can suggest is the SIG(special intrest group)or get some magazines on maybe MODELRAILROADER Index Mag.,just put your size in then it will take you to some magazines that have some track plans for that size.

Yes, there are custom designers. The late John Armstrong was one. This page on MR’s shopping > manufacturer’s links http://www.trains.com/Content/Dynamic/Articles/000/000/003/003cmdyz.asp has a custom builders section, some of whom will do just the design.

Thanks for the links Paul. That is what I was looking forin my original post. I’d also entertain talking to those of an amature nature. I’m sure the guys on this forum are just as good,if not better than the pros.

Brian…I’m modeling in HO scale, forgot to mention that. I’m looking for it to be set in the eastern mtns, very similar to Tony Koesters old layout. Coal would play a big part in opreations, with bridge traffic and some 60s era intermodal.I want a decent sized yard for switching with engine servicing facilities, set in an urban area, leading to a rural mountainous mainline run. Timeframe is spanning the early 60s to early 70s. With the space i have,I’d like as long a mainline run as possible, maybe a two deck layout. Preferably a point to point style, with staging, and continuous running capabilities at those times I just want to watch a train circulate.

Industries should be compatible with the area, and as many as possible while maintaining the mountanous flavor. I have a list of must haves and wants,I just don’t have the talent to design something myself. That’s where the designer I’m seeking comes in.Any help would be greatly appreciated.
