Can someone tell me what the purpose is of the football shaped pieces of rail in the middle of the track here and there that I’ve seen in old railroad videos?. They appear like they might be part of a turnout but there’s no turnout there, just these odd looking shaped rails… I’ve been meaning to ask this for a long time.

my guess is that they are either some type of re-railer or a de-railer (I don’t really know)[swg] or they are guard rails for like on bridge spans?
Where have you seen them at? are they on a bridge?
They may be guard rails left behind from a crossing or diamond that was removed.
You mean like these?
They’re guard rails to keep the loco or cars from wandering too far from the rails in the event of a derail.
