i am toying with a question that i hope someone might help. whats the difference between kato track and atlas track?Besides the cost. thanks
If you’re looking for track with built-on roadbed, the Kato uni-track is the best. The only Atlas track I’m familiar with is their flex-track and sectional snap track.
can the kato track be used on the woodland scenics scenic ridge laylout? or am i limited to use the track they say to use which is atlas
Of that I have no idea. I’ve never used preformed layout bases like those offered by Woodland Scenics. I’ve thought about it a few times but the high price always drives me away.
i agree the price is a tad high but i have seen the price lower at model train shows here in the land of taxes, which by the way one is coming up in the month of November, but if you are short on time this maybe a good or almost good way to go.
Woodland Scenic layouts are designed to be built with Atlas track. You would probably have to modify any other brand of track to get it to fit.
Jeff-Atlas makes A True Track with the built in roadbed. Prices are pretty low but selection looks limited.

Tanks Loathar. I didn’t think about their Tru-Track. Looking at it, the selection looks worse than Bachmann’s EZ-Track. Maybe they have more than they show on that site.
If you want to go with the preformed track… Kato seems to win for quality and selection… but man is it expensive. Probably it is an easy way to have fairly bulletproof track with not too much effort.
But you’ll save tons of money using Atlas, and find it’s much more flexible for creating a layout like you want. But you can’t just plop it together. It requires a learning curve, and your first layout will probably have some derailments. Long run, though, I it’s think a better choice.
I went to my HO Scale Walthers’ 2007 and 2008 catalogs thinking that if I had a picture I could make a WAG but I couldn’t find anything labeled Woodland Scenics Scenic Ridge layout; are you absolutely sure that you have the right name for this overpriced turkey?
You might keep this in mind: since WS doesn’t market their own track they are likely to configure these layout kits for a recommended make of track; I would say that if WS is recommending Atlas track that is the track that will fit on their layout.
As an aside a German company marketed one of these prefab units - they were formed instead of foamed - in the early days of N Scale; a buddy of mine assembled one - in Germany - but the specs called for Rapido and Rapido was not only expensive but was also in short supply. He modified the form to get it to fit Minitrix. A WAG says that depending on how articulate you are with a saw and If you insist upon using Kato Unitrack you could probably get it to work.
