Trackside Vol. 179 voting begins. Comment here!

Hello:

Trackside Vol. 179, “In the City,” is ready for your votes and thoughts. What do you think?

I went with Paul Hoffman’s photo. I’m quite familiar with the location and getting both Metra and the L in the same photo shows Chicago transit quite nicely.

Paul Hoffman in a flash! One of the things I always use to explain why Ridewithmehenry trips are fun for railfans although all in city and suburban areas, is that you don’t have just one thing or one railroad. City railroading encompasses heavy and light rail, freight and passenger, and people, lots of people. So, Paul captured more of railroads in the city than the others which seem one sided.

Excellent photo Mr Hoffman.

Thanks for bringing back some wounderfull memories of my time spent in Chicago.

I, too, went with Paul’s picture, for all of the reasons stated above, plus a now-rare locomotive, the active tower, and the L train all in the shot.

One minor nit to pick: the L train is nowhere near the Red Line, which goes through the Loop via subway. The signs in the cars themselves suggest that this is a Green Line train (the other possibility would be pink, which might look like red).

Easy pick for me: Paul’s [bow] [bow] [bow] [bow]

Love seeing both trains in the photo in the angle and light that he captured .

I chose Tom Nanos’ photo showing much action in the city station.

Liked the sharpness and available light in the photograph.

The Reader Submission’s photo, I’d rate second…Just thought the “city station” image said “city” better.

Liked Matt Van Hattem’s photo too, but not defining “city” as well as my first choice.

I used to live two blocks from the site of Mike Roque’s photo. I know the place well and it brings back many fond memories. Many times have I ridden “the Judah Trolly”. But, nostalgia aside, Paul Hoffman’s photo, also take from a familiar site, really captures railroads in the city. Great shot!!

I was just a little disappointed. Love all the pics, but didn’t see the one I submitted. Not sure why as I didn’t receive any notification that I submitted wrong. Maybe the next one I can do. Jake Musselman

Had to go with Paul,s picture. It said to me IN THE CITY where so often the theme seems to be a second thought. Too often great photos that do not really compliment the theme are chosen. I vote on subject matter first then the visual and aesthetic quality of the picture. Paul’s entry conformed to the theme although it could have used some Photoshopping perk it up IMHO**.**

I understand, I didn’t understand when submitting that only one reader submission made it through. Makes sense though otherwise we would be trying to vote on hundreds of photos. Next time I will choose the more appropriate picture for the theme. Thank you for the clarification. Jake

Nice photo for Drew Halverson, that CSX brute of a loco not only draws the colour out of the brickwork, but the brickwork almost seems to be coming at you too!

Nice one Drew, I like the canted reverse curves too!

All shots were good for city viewing, but considering Paul had a reader submission, his was my winner. Great camera work, and in recording two trains on the same picture.

A couple of good entries. I went with Paul, too.

ME? I was partial to Alex’s shot. [bow]

It was the combination of all the elements in the shot that said 'CITY" to me. [2c]

I voted for Tom Nanos’s photo. I have been gone from NJ for decades, but in my youth I used to hang out at Newark Penn. Spent hours there train watching. Even today, I pass through occasionally while traveling to visit family (cross-country, by train, of course). I must arrive/depart off hours because it is quieter then. Good to see it so busy around rush hour, though!

Hi, Jake:

Yes, only one reader submission is randomly chosen to participate with our core group. Please don’t be discouraged. Keep sending photos! And, I will be adjusting the rules on the website to clarify that only one reader will be chosen to participate.

Thanks for your submission!

All the shots in this contest say city really well. For me, my second fave is Matt’s for the sheer beauty of a train in a city context. However, as a guy who lives in a big city and takes three subway trains to work, it is Tom’s shot that resonates for me. In the end, I like to feel that big cities are not just about big buildings but people also. I think it is safe to say that we human’s, as a whole, relate to people more. (At least most of the time!) Good idea for this weeks contest Trains, I like it!
