Trackside with Trains.com Vol. 176: January

Folks —

Trackside with Trains.com Vol. 176, January, is now live. Click here to vote for your favorite.

You didn’t state what the theme was…so since it is January and winter, I went with that being the idea. Thus, if most of us live in the North, especially the east, Dave Lustig’s shot probably is where most of us wish we were in any given January. But, Tom Nano’s shot explains best what January railroading is like for most of us, or since we are here, what we like to see most: a locomotive blasting through snow fall and drifts…

I went with Alex Mayes. The fresh snow and the long shadow of the pole are typical of a bright ccccolddd day in January. But that’s from a western Canadian perspective. I can see that other folks will experience a quite different January. And it’s a great picture too.

Looked at each rather close. Surprised to see, when enlarged, each one had something gone for it. Not seeing any “theme” posted for this collection I just studied each, and settled on the Drew Halverson photo.

I liked the tone of the color…Winter, dark and cold appearing. The setting has as a subject a local climbing what appears to me, a pretty good grade thru the pronounced “S” curve, and along with good looking track.

Must be late and setting sun on the red front of the approaching engine with a few cars. That makes a focal point of the photo.

My second choice would be the photo by David Lustig. Engine and trainmen up close, and it seems to bring out clear details.

Thanks Q! I appreciate your vote and response. Your assessment of the photo is spot on.

…You’re welcome.
