Traction Wheels on a P2K 0-6-0

I recently purchased 2 of these little steam engines and would like to install the Traction Wheels that came in the package. Problem is that Walthers did not include a set of instructions with either locomotive on HOW to do change these out. [:O]

Has anyone already done this and would be willing to explain it to me? I don’t want to screw up the Side Rods and associated linkage that move the drivers.

Michael

Hi there Michael,

Please understand I am not trying to hijack your question…

I have an older 0-6-0 and given its not terribly good pulling power although I hate tyres, perhaps I could retrofit mine? Are these wheels available separately?

Thanks

On the new one, you should have a little socket wrench to remove the rod bolts from the driver set. Make a little padded cradle and lay it in there upside down. Remove the very little screws on the bottom plate under the drivers. Watch CAREFULLY where and how everything goes. Lift out the one driver set, drop in the other one. Put a small drop of good plastic compatible oil on each journal of each driver while you are in there. Replace plate and screws. Reinstall rod bolts. Do NOT force ANYTHING at any point in the process. If you have things right, everything fits together smooth as silk.

Walthers does not have any traction tired driver replacement sets available for any of the P2K steam engines yet, and they may in fact not get those for separate sale. (LifeLike, sniff, sniff, I miss you) If, like me, you would want to buy some of those, call Walthers and tell them so. Maybe, if enough people… Maybe.

Thanks Virginian,

I have 2 of the 0-6-0’s with the traction wheel in the seperate little baggie. Now I have an idea of how to install them. Do you have a suggestion on which driver I should replace with the traction wheel, I was thinking the middle one…???
