[Hi out there;
I own a lionel 611 N&W J-class (a 1981 re-issue of the 746). How can I improve it’s traction so that it can pull my 7 passenger cars up a grade without spinning it’s wheels?
If you manage, you only get there by adding weight. Be sure that your motor will not overheat… There is no substitute to metric ounces[:D]
Wrap the two rearmost wheels in masking tape, trimmed to fit. Be sure to clean them with some rubbing alcohol on a q-tip(with the wheels slowly turning) before putting it on there.
You’ll be amazed at how much better the traction is.
add a helper like the real RR’s do (or add some sand on the tracks)
The 8100 Lionel N&W J included Magnetraction. I’d be the first to admit traction tires would do a better job at helping to climb a grade, but here are some alternatives.
If you’re not already using O-31 track or Atlas steel track on the grade, consider switching to one of these heavier-gauge steel tracks to improve the magnetic attraction.
Make sure all wheels on your passenger cars (Powhattan Arrow?) are well-lubricated and free of debris.
this engine is based on the old berkshire chassis. it was a poor design as if you look at the engine as it sits on the track at eye level you will see the 4 inner blind drivers do not touch the rail, so the magnetraction is only helping you on the front and rear drivers.
Masking tape would help, but I can;t imagine it will last long, but I never tried it either.
There is someone that has been listed elsewhere who puts grooves in wheels and mtgs traction tires. Anyone know who this is.
Bill.
