Hi all,
My fiancés grandfather was an avid train lover, and he had an HO scale layout later in his life. As my future in-laws have been going through his stuff, they’ve graciously given some of his old model trains to me. Though they don’t fit the plans I have for my layout, I plan to convert them to DCC and run them anyway (thanks rule 1).
However, I’m very lacking in knowledge about diesel locomotives. Can anyone help me identify these two? And does anyone have experiece with DCC conversions on either unit? The Reading Lines locomotive is made by AHM, but I can’t find any company markings on the MOW unit.

The Santa Fe engine is a Model Diecasting (MDC) product. Both it and the AHM GP-18 are vintage 1970’s designs. It should be possible to equip them with DCC but I’ve not ever seen it done.

When I pop the body off the Santa Fe it looks like the biggest challenge is going to be isolating the motor. I’m not sure how exactly it’s held in place.

Yep that’s what I remember. An open-frame motor and that thick frame. Gears leading down to the trucks and a separate flywheel.

Looks like there’s a can motor replacement kit out there on ebay, that’s probably the path I’ll take.

Thank you @gregc! Looks like a motor replacement is in order.
