I was looking into subscribing to a railroading magazine. Can anyone offer any recommendations. Which have the best articles and pictures of layouts and other cool stuff…
Kind of depends on what type of railroading most interests you and, more importantly, what scale in model railroading you prefer.
For O gauge/scale there’s “Classic Toy Trains,” “O Gauge Railroading,” and “O Scale Trains.”
For S gauge/scale, there’s “S Gaugian” and some S gauge coverage in “Classic Toy Trains.”
For HO, N, and a bit of O scale, there’s “Model Railroader,” “Railroad Model Craftsman,” and “Model Railroading.”
For N scale only, there’s “N Scale.”
For Large Scale, there’s “Garden Railways.”
For Z scale, there’s “Z Track.”
For Narrow gauge prototype and modeling, there’s “Narrow Gauge and Shortline Gazette.”
For prototype railroading, there’s “Trains” and “Classic Trains” (and a few others).
I’ve undoubtedly overlloned a few here, but the point is that there are a good number of publications out there, and many are specific to a particular gauge or scale.
trainmaster,
I would suggest, that you go to the bookstore and get one of each in your scale/guage. Do this for a couple of months and you will get an idea of what best suits your taste and needs. I have subscribed to Classic Toy Trains and OGuage Rail. I am in the planning stages for a good size layout and these both have good information. I also continue to go and look at Model Railroader, which is mostly HO, but has some good ideas. If I see something of interest, I pick up a copy. Once my layout is up and running, I think I will cull it back to just Classic Toy Trains, and keep up with this forum as it has plenty of information.

trainmaster,
I find my local hobby shop has a much better selection of train magazines than the bookstore.
